audio sounds like its coming from the back of the phone

Technically im using a j3 star but that wasnt an option. I spilled a drink and it dripped into the speaker, so my first reaction was to wrap my finger around my shirt and use my nail to get into the speaker hole to dry it up. But either it was too late or I pushed the speaker in too far because now when I try to play something through my phone speaker the vibrations dont actually go through the speaker hole they end up vibrating through the material on the back of the phone. I verified this by taking off the back of the phone and sure enough it was louder. I tried using a tooth brush in the speaker hole to see if something was causing a blockage but the problem was still there. Should I wait for it overnight to dry and retry the toothbrush method or have I pushed the speaker too far inside of itself?

Hi

The impurities in the water causes corrosion and provides circuit paths for the electricity which were not in the phone's operating design and could damage the components. The corrosion starts immediately and is ongoing until it has been properly cleaned away

First do not try to charge or to turn on your phone and then remove the battery as soon as possible to prevent any further damage.

Then you need to dis-assemble the rest of the phone and clean all the affected parts using Isopropyl Alcohol 99%+ (available from electronics parts stores) to remove all traces of corrosion and water. If possible, do not use "rubbing alcohol" as in some cases this is <70% IPA, can contain additives and is not as effective. If you do have to use it, check the label to verify the amount of IPA

Here is a link that describes the process. Electronics Water Damage

As always with electronics, especially surface mounted pcb be gentle when handling and especially when brushing away the corrosion. You do not want to remove any components from the boards.

Hopefully after you have done all this the phone might possibly work correctly again.

Here is the ifixit Samsung Galaxy J3 Luna Pro repair guide which may be of some help.

If this process seems too daunting, take your phone to a reputable, professional mobile phone repair service, experienced in water damage repair and ask for a quote for a repair.

If you decide to do this, do it sooner than later.

Its hard to tell, first off if any electrical device gets wet the first thing to do is placing the device into a cup of rice - about 2 or 3 hours later ist dust dry again.

i would wait until the speaker is dry then test again. if sound doesnt change to normal again the only thing you can do is open the phone and rearrange the speaker. but with most smartphones these days its cheaper to get any bluetooth speaker…

hopefully just dry will solve this problem

Rice is for dinner, not repair

Cheers

Hi @jayeff

For my part: i hate rice for dinner, except asian food.

I knew its not the best way to dry out phones BUT rice wont ever damage your phone more than the water it got soaked in. Dont get me wrong. I think if someone asks such a question on ifixit he is not a professional like you who would dismantle the phone in about 30 minutes. If i get emergency calls that some devices got wet and i cant get there in time i everytime said that is should get placed into rice and place it under a lamp for minimalistic heat and until now it nearly worked everytime so i got called the next day that i dont need to come. maybe luck, maybe not. i cant find any study which shows that doing this is damaging anything. sure there are many better ways, but most people have rice at home and most people dont have dry packs at home or are confident enough to dismantle their loved phone

best regards

Hi @dmthie

Rice doesn’t damage anything but I think that it doesn’t really help either.

I think that the problem with rice is that it gives a false sense that it is doing something to fix the problem, whilst all the time there is still power on a wet systemboard even though the phone may be switched off.

Most people think that when the phone is off that this means that the power is disconnected, but really the phone is just in an extremely low power state. The power button is not a power isolating button that disconnects the power from the board. It merely signals the OS as to what the user wants to happen. There is still power available at various points on the systemboard and if the board is wet then there’s the potential for current to flow where it shouldn’t and damage components or set up a cathodic reaction between the water and the metals inside the phone, creating corrosion.

Switching off the phone and then removing or disconnecting the battery is the first and best thing to do to minimize more problems from happening. Manufacturers don’t make it easy by making it difficult to do this however, so all you can initially do is to switch off and then let it dry out as best you can (under a lamp as you suggested perhaps) and open it as soon as possible to inspect and clean.

The temptation is that it will be switched on too soon to check if it is OK which may only create more problems.

I’ve seen wet phones that supposedly “worked” after being rice dried only, fail 2-6 months later as the corrosion got worse because it hadn’t been cleaned.

With this particular phone at least it is easy to remove the battery and dry it out.

Take care and stay safe

Cheers

I ended up letting it dry over night but no luck, guess the speakers just messed up and Ill have to either get a new phone or always use headphones
