How can I reset BIOS password?

I have purchased a second-hand laptop and found the BIOS is password protected?

Is there a way to reset/remove BIOS password on this particular laptop?

I have tried removing CMOS battery but this has no effect (I believe BIOS password is held in NVRAM on this model).

HP say the only way to remove the BIOS password is to replace the motherboard which I am not willing to do as apart from being able to access the BIOS, the laptop is running fine.

Hello. What you can do is de-solder the BIOS chip and dump the file contained in the chip, and then edit out the BIOS password. I can go in depth with you if you like. It will cost you about $10 in parts (unless you dont have a soldering kit, then its more like $30-50).

E-mail me at lionpcrepair@gmail.com and I can give you exact instructions on how to get the file from the chip, then I can remove the password for you and/or show you how to do it.

You can't…

You need tools that cost more then the laptop to rewrite BIOs and then you need software versions match for firmware and INtel ME or it won's boot plus the DMI tool.

Long story short, forget about it! Return or use as is…

Just read this and it gave me a glimpse of the future of bios support from computer manufacturers. Looked pretty depressing too!

Thanks for the reply (and the link) but HP say they will only supply a SCM.bin file for machines that are still under warranty. They say the only option after this is to replace the system board which seems a bit OTT as the system does not have any other fault.

What is the serial number of the unit?

S/n: is 5CG6195QF3

Hmm, I tried to see if HP's website had anything to offer based on that serial number and no luck. I think you may have bought a pig in a poke. Have you any luck contacting the seller?

Replace the BIOS chip, or download a dump of the BIOS chip and delete the password. I did this on a laptop HP EliteBook 820 G3.
