Black screen when powered on- No connection to other monitors

Hi all,

When I turn my laptop on, I have a black screen- not backlit at all. I connected it to another display, my Wacom Cintiq and it said No Input Signal. When powered on, all the lights turn on but the hard drive light slowly fades out. The fan is running as well. I tried replacing the hard drive with a new one and still nothing. If it’s a BIOS problem, how do I access it from a black screen?? Thanks for the help!

Hi,

The HDD light slowly fading may just mean that it has finished being used for whatever reason and is not required at the moment, e.g. startup processes have been completed perhaps and nothing else has been requested by either OS admin tasks or user input.

Did you try pressing Fn + F7 to check if the screen turns on, you didn’t say?

With an external display connected did you try pressing Fn + F8 to toggle the video output between the laptop display only, the external display only and both displays on together, you didn’t say?

Try shining a torch at an angle close to the screen to check if you can detect an image at all when the laptop has booted. It will be very faint so try this in a darkened room to help see it if it is there or not.

If you can detect an image you have a backlight problem. This could be caused by a faulty display panel, a faulty cable or cable connection between the display panel and the motherboard or a faulty motherboard backlight power supply circuit.

If you cannot detect an image then it could be a faulty display panel, a faulty cable or cable connection between the display panel and the motherboard or a faulty motherboard.

You can’t access BIOS at startup, with an external screen connected to the motherboard’s VGA or HDMI ports as the OS needs to be loaded to enable this to happen.

The problem with the screen has to be resolved first.

The functions with F keys doesn't bring anything up. I can't detect an image even in a dark room with a flashlight. Is there a way I can know for sure if it's the motherboard or the display panel? I don't want to buy a replacement screen and it actually be the motherboard that I need to replace or vice versa. Thank you for your input!!

@linttastic ,

Try booting into safe mode and check if there is a display or not both internal and external, just in case it is a corrupted video driver that is causing the problem. You can only try. If there is no video either then that is another possibility eliminated

If you can, try to connect the laptop to another external monitor via the HDMI port. Even a TV can be used as an external monitor as long as it has HDMI inputs and you have a HDMI cable that can connect the two together.

This is to just verify that there is definitely no video output.

If it doesn't work either in safe mode then most probably will be a motherboard problem as the graphics adapter is integrated in the CPU and you say that the laptop is starting up etc.

Unfortunately as a DIY repair the only way to find out is whether it is the screen or the motherboard is by temporarily replacing the screen with a known working screen and check what happens, just in case the old screen is somehow affecting the video output.

@jayeff Thanks! Seems like it's definitely the motherboard since no external display connections are working. This was helpful. Thank you for your input! Off I go to find a motherboard replacement then!

Did you make sure to turn off the laptop before connecting the external monitor, turning on the external monitor and then turning on the laptop? If not done in that order, sometimes it won't work.

If you did do that, or you do and it still doesn't work, then you are probably looking at a graphics card/GPU problem. And either it will need replacing, or the whole motherboard will.

Yeah I tried it that way and I still get the No Signal message on my second display. Is there a way I can know if it's for sure the motherboard or if it's the graphics card? When I opened up the laptop, the motherboard lights were still on for the other functioning pieces. Is there a way I can "test" the motherboard? Thank you!

Sorry for the delay reply, but please refer to a post https://www.pcgamer.com/how-can-i-tell-i..., if it helps you. Thank you!

@v3nuo Thank you! I'll definitely check that out! Seems like it's definitely a motherboard issue. Ah well, guess I'll go try and replace that then! Thank you for your input! :)
