Hello!

I had a recently accident in Bali with my gopro hero 4 black.

Yesterday i went to dive and the dive case was not fully closed perhaps because the white rubber around the back case was damaged and salty water came through it. Besides, i didn't put the lateral black plastic cap over the ports (Charge&SD) so i think the water went through the camera easier.

I did realize when i was at 30 meters, so i couldn't do anything to stop the water coming in until we finished the dive.

Well, after diving when i arrived to the bungalow. I put the camera in sweet water trying to remove the salt. After that, i went to buy some rice to put it inside around 1 day and half.

Right now, i am able to switch on the camera. The front lcd works well and also the front button. The shutter button and the lateral wifi doesn't respond.

The charger port and Micro SD doesn't work. I connected an external LCD Bacpac and the screen is fully black so I think the camera doesn't work properly neither.

I would like to repair it as far as i can.

Do you think would be possible to fix it?

Which spare parts do you think i need to change?

I really appreciate your help!

As you know water and electronics and electricity are not a good mix.

The impurities in the sea water, any water really except distilled water, causes corrosion and provides circuit paths for the electricity which were not in the camera’s operating design and could damage the components.

First do not turn on your camera and then you need to remove the battery as soon as possible from the camera to minimize any further damage.

Rice does not fix the problems caused by corrosion.

Then you need to dis-assemble the rest of the camera and clean all the affected parts using Isopropyl Alcohol 90%+ (available from electronics parts stores) to remove all traces of corrosion and water. Do not use "rubbing alcohol" as in some cases this is only 70% IPA or less, can contain scents and is not as effective. If you do have to use it, check the label to verify the amount of IPA

Electronics Water Damage

As always with electronics, especially surface mounted PCBs be gentle when handling and especially when brushing away the corrosion. You do not want to remove any components from the boards.

Hopefully after you have done all this the camera might possibly work correctly again.

If this process seems too daunting, take your camera to a reputable, professional camera repair service, experienced in liquid damage repair and ask for a quote for a repair. If you decide to do this, do it sooner than later.
