Washer stops at spin cycle, but drains. Drain and spin cycle works?

Hi,

I'm having a hard time finding an answer to this specific scenario. My Whirlpool washer model # WTW4815EW0, about 4 years old, recently stopped spinning out clothes at the end of a wash cycle. We use both the normal cycle and bulky items, and this occurs on both. The problem began gradually, only sometimes would the washer not spin out at the end of the cycle. Now it's every time. However, the strange part is that mechanically it has no issue spinning. After it decides to quit on the wash cycle (clothes are clean and tub drained, but still sopping wet), I just set it to drain and spin and it finishes the job without problem. So I don't think it's a lid latch, a belt, or anything that would stop it from spinning ever. What do I need to do to fix this? The washer was cheap to begin with and the cost of a repair person could easily cost as much as it did new, so if it's not something I can fix on my own I'll just get a new one. Thanks for any help.

Update (09/08/2019)

I have some updated information. I ran some manual tests and found that the washer spins on low but not on high speed. The low speed test runs without issue. During the high speed test, the motor kicks in for just a second and then immediately quits, with lid lock light flashing. I performed a tachometer test which it also seemed to fail. I checked the belt underneath which looks good. Drive test performed good. Control board has no obvious damage.

I have a similar problem except mine will usually spin OK the first couple loads of the day and only fail on a third load or maybe if the load is a little heavier. Also if I do the spin cycle again, it won’t recover and it fails the same way as described here: it just fails to switch to high gear.

was there any good outcome for this issue?

My Whirlpool Washer had the same problem. The solution is simple: Hold the Cancel/Reset button long enough to do a Reset [removing the 'unbalanced load' code stored by the normal cycle]. Then do a Drain/Spin.

We are having the exact same issue with our Whirlpool washer. Did you find a solution?

iFixit Staff Suggestion: You can also try this troubleshooting page entitled Whirlpool Washer Not Spinning

A defective speed sensor on the actuator will often cause problems for the machine, as will the actuator itself if it can't get the splutch (yes that's what even Whirlpool calls it) to shift fully so that both the agitator and basket can spin.

Kelly, yes I did! It was the shift actuator! Apparently on this model, this part actually houses what is essentially the speedometer of the machine. Without a working speedometer, it will not spin on high as a safety thing. Replacing the shift actuator fully resolved the issue, and it was extremely easy to do. There are lots of YouTube videos. Good luck!

@leahmig44 fantastic!! Thank you!!

Now this isn't what mine is doing i don't think mine works fine until it's time for the water spin out cycle, it drains but will not spin the water out, what could cause this issue on my whirlpool

One thing to try, is the filter empty? On the base corner of your washer there should be a flap, with instructions of how to empty the filter, maybe there is a clog that’s stopping it from working. Has a error appeared on the screen when it stops?

Thanks for your reply, but I think this applies to front load washers. Mine is a top load and does not have this filter flap.

ahh ok, sorry i dont know much about top loading ones.

My Whirlpool Cabrio model which is 11 yrs old doesn’t have an actuator. And I too have the issue in that it drains and spins fine but only on drain and spin and won’t spin on with the wash or rinse and drain. At $150 for just the service call unless I knew it was a $50 or $100 fix and not find out it’s $200 or more it’s not worth it and not one repair place can even give me an idea. I’ve repaired my dryer and lawnmowers and more and an actuator would have been an easy fix.

@antiquegirl If you are sure it doesn't have an actuator, It sounds possibly like a control board issue or possibly a position sensor. The older Cabrios were direct drive, but used a novel floating basket in place of a clutch. When the washer filled with water, the basket floated! upward and a hub on the basket disengaged from the driven shaft When the machine drained, the basket sank back down and the hub engaged the toothed hub on the driven shaft. There were some complicated gyrations that the machine would do to check if the hubs were engaged so it could spin. Can you give a model number?

Thanks. I know it doesn’t have an actuator as I called up whirlpool. I tried following a reset by unplugging wash machine for a half an hour and then when I plugged it back in with a dial a normal, it said turn wants to the left three times to the right once to the left and wants to the right again and now what it’s doing is it’s beginning to fill up with water for about 15 seconds and then starts to drain and then fills up with water for about 10 seconds and starts to drain so I think I did more damage and trying to reset it

Motor Control Board

The motor control board provides power to the motor. If the motor control board is defective, the washer may not function properly or may not work at all. First, check the control board for burned out components. To determine if the motor control board is defective, ensure that the control board is providing power to the motor. If the control board has power, but is not providing power to the motor, replace it.

Hi @antiquegirl ,

Here's the tech sheet for the washer. Run the automatic diagnostic test as per p.1 of the manual and check what error code is displayed.
