How to find what is brocken after water damage

About a week ago my wife dropped her Honor 6A on a water bowl.

She removed the phone immediately (according to her it was like a couple of seconds) and, as the phone still worked ok, she just cleaned it off with a cloth and continued using it the whole day.

After a couple of hours the phone started behaving strangely. In the evening when she came home and showed me the phone the touch screen wasn’t really working (just sometimes for a little moment) and i turned the phone off.

We took out the SIM and SD cards and we have put the phone in rice for about 4 days.

Now we can’t turn the phone on.

When we try to charge the phone the front LED blinks red a couple of times, the phone vibrates shortly a couple of times (mostly 2 times with about 10 second interval) and then it just goes black.

A long press of the POWER button makes the phone vibrate twice, with about 3 seconds interval. But it still doesn’t turn on (doing this there are no blinking LEDs)

I have tried connecting it to my laptop via USB using some android recovery apps. At some point it asks me to turn on the USB Debugging (she probably never used it and so it is still off) so it didn’t work.

I have opened the phone and let it dry another couple of days, but still no change.

Is there a way to find out what is brocken? Maybe the battery?

We would love to be able to at least save some photos that she hasn’t backed up.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you

Hi @boguzdidgeridoo ,

As you know water and electronics and electricity are not a good mix.

The impurities in the water causes corrosion and provides circuit paths for the electricity which were not in the phone's operating design and could damage the components.

Rice is good to eat but does nothing to fix the problems caused by water and corrosion

Don't Put Your Device in Rice. Here's Why...

First do not turn on your phone and then you need, remove the battery as soon as possible from the phone to minimize further damage.

Then you need to dis-assemble the rest of the phone and clean all the affected parts using Isopropyl Alcohol 90%+ (available from electronics parts stores) to remove all traces of corrosion and water. Do not use "rubbing alcohol" as in some cases this is only 70% IPA or less, can contain scents and is not as effective. If you do check the label to verify the amount of IPA

Here is a link that describes the process.

Electronics Water Damage

As always with electronics, especially surface mounted PCBs be gentle when handling and especially when brushing away the corrosion. You do not want to remove any components from the board.

Hopefully after you have done all this the phone might possibly work correctly again.

Here is a link to the ifixit guide for repairing the display in your phone. It is helpful (to a degree) as it shows how to open the phone to gain access to the components inside.

If this process seems too daunting, take your phone to a reputable, professional phone repair service, experienced in water damage repair and ask for a quote for a repair. If you decide to do this, do it sooner than later.

Thanks, those are some very useful information.

Sadly she didn't turn the phone off, she still used it for one whole day, until the screen didn't work anymore.

Is there a way to just get the internal memory and somehow connect it to our computer to save the photos? That would be amazing!

Thanks!

Hi @boguzdidgeridoo ,

So nothing was auto backed up to the cloud or saved to the SD Card (if installed) then?

There is software available online that claims to work recovering data from water damaged phones without debugging turned on.

Just search for Android Data Recovery Without USB Debugging or similar to get results

I've never tried this so I don't know if it works or not.

Your call.

Good Luck!
