So, my phone fell on the floor with a cover (not the first time), now my screen has a small rectangular area which is partially insensitive (no screen cracks or visible damage. I have yet to open the phone and check for visible hardware damage. Should I proceed in buying a screen replacement? Or should I open it up first?

Your Digitizer has failed because of the fall, most likely. Time to replace it.
