Why does the screen turn black when I unplug it from the power?

My ASUS Transformer Book Flip TP500LA laptop’s screen goes dark when I unplug it from the power adapter. More specifically when I unplug the computer from charging the screen is barely seeable, its not a brightness issue, you really have to look at it to see whats happening. Then when you plug it back in, everything works like normal. I have tried everything like changing the battery, updated drivers, changed Intel’s graphic settings, pressed the brightness buttons the opposite way, and changed power options. But nothing works, is there a hardware/software problem I don’t know about that does this? Is there something I haven’t tried?

Hi @glenta ,

You could try starting the laptop in “safe mode” and see how it works, just in case it is an unrelated driver problem. (search online for “how to start -insert your particular OS - in safe mode” if you don’t know how)

If it still fails when in safe mode but it works OK when on the charger but not when it’s on the battery only, then I’d suspect that the battery is not able to supply the necessary power and the laptop is scaling back on what needs to be kept powered on.

I’d start by replacing the battery and then see what happens. Even rechargeable batteries have a lifespan.

Couple of things that I would try.

I would try to determine if it is OS related or hardware related.

Here's a link to a free memory test program

It's not that you're testing the memory per se it's just that this is a program that doesn't need Windows to operate. Download it to a USB flashdrive and then boot from the disc (change the boot order to USB first option) and see what happens to the display when you remove the charger.

If it works OK then to me it points to a Win OS / hardware compatibility problem and further checking is required.

If it also fails it is more likely to be a hardware related problem.

When you say that you tried "new" drivers (I presume). Where did you get them from?

The support page for your laptop has very few available.

Here's a link to the latest Asus Win 10 drivers (if this is what you have installed) for laptops and notebook. In the "other" drivers section there are some for the Transformer book. If your drivers are not up to this version I suggest that you might update them. Do it one at a time in case problems develop and if nothing happens either way i.e. they work but it doesn't solve the problem , do another one.

There are also others which are used in Transformer books as well as other types of Asus laptops e.g. Express Cache for example. You may need to go through and check in Device Manager and also Control panel > Program and Features to see if there are any more. It doesn't hurt to stay up to date. Also again do it one at a time and check performance before doing another.

I also suggest that you create a Restore Point, so if anything does go wrong you can always restore back to before you started.
