Can an iPhone work while deconstructed?

I have never attempted taking apart an iPhone before. I am generally familiar with the parts, but not with their connections. I am interested in taking an iPhone apart and making a display(like a museum display, not an LCD-type display) of the different layers of components in a way similar to CG models that can be found online. I would be content with this, but I wanted to go one step further - Would it be possible to display a deconstructed iphone with connections made between components such that the phone could be somewhat operable?

(e.g., is there anything I can do to take an iPhone apart but still make it turn on). I don't plan on fully breaking down the phone, but if there is any way this could possibly work, I would greatly appreciate your help. If there is no way this could work, I'll stick with the basics. Thanks!

Update (04/14/2017)

This is very helpful. I'm still waiting on parts to start the project, but this will be useful insight once I begin. Thanks for the help and quick response!

Ok, so I got may hands on a good iPhone 4. Before I open it up, I want to know if it's dangerous. I am new at this, so I want to make sure I'm not going to get sick/harmed/die front the insides of it. I've read online that there are toxic chemicals in all devices, but it's in the context of the environment - I want to know about me. Am I safe doing this?

Gotchu, definitely watch the video I linked in the solution, it'll give you an insight and a bit of background on the assembly of an iPhone.

What? Yes, totally do able. As far as the connections, iFixit does sell some of those cables. I really don't know where you would find more of them. Or even really exactly how to buy the parts to make these cables right off hand. Can it be done. Yes. How much work would you be willing to do, to make that happen?

I bought one. Pretty unhappy with how short it is. Still haven't taken it out of the package

+1...Cool colours on your workbench!!

da

Haha @refectio yeah I've always been obsessed with the colors. For iPhones since the 4. The coolest print I ever saw was corkboard. Right now my 6S looks like a 7 with a glowing Apple logo. Been putting some effort into making it an eggplant phone, got the idea from Afro samurai. Figured out how to disassemble those Apple led logos. Now trying to figure out how to make it two tone. Purple and green, for the top

Hey Jack, it's funny you mentioned this because recently I watched this video of a man creating an iPhone 6S from scratch In the middle of this video he tests the display of an iPhone with just a logic board and battery which can be seen being done in this part of the video. If you mean being able to use an iPhone without the back template of the iPhone and just the parts I believe that it's definitely possible. A way you can make this work is bydisassembling your iPhone and connecting the parts to function it. Just be careful to not loose the parts or screw in the wrong screws during your experiment.

-Let me know if this helps

Yes, but not recommended, because it might damage it more, or completely break it.

Homebrew fixie?

Ouch, those brake hoods are low, my back wouldn't be happy :>)

Nah, at @refectio single speed. A lot of people who moved into my hometown think they're very hardcore with a fixie. Oh those drop bars! Never had em before, thought it would be cool. I do not like it one bit!

I've opened numerous devices before and theres nothing of that sort to worry about. If you're really worried about your safety, be sure to wear an anti-static wrist band and immediately unplug the battery cable when inside the device. Make sure the device is completely off before opening. iFixit also has guides on tearing down iPhones, so check back on your model for guidance. Don't accidentally break any wires or plug in the wrong screws any where. Just be aware of these things, and you should be fine.

You're fine. Nothing big. Non leader solder in there. Just don't try to open the Li-Ion battery
