Is there recalls for srs light staying on dashboard?

da

Hi all. I think my mechanic is trying to rip me hard. Srs light is on in my 96 accord. Has been for a while & he's come back at me with $350 to get it fixed. Am I paranoid or is he legit?

da

Hi Daniel, My car has the same problem since 2016. I am driving Honda 2002 accord though SRS is on. It didn’t create any problem for me. Check engine spark plugs it would cost you around 70$.

da

Go to u tube and search how to reset or shut off your srs light and it is very simple and free

da

Thanks all. The light doesn’t create an issue either. Just would like to figure it out.

I actually dealt with this last week at my shop. The SRS light is a warning light for your supplemental restraint system (airbags). An SRS light means that there is a problem in the system. The first thing I would check is the fuse for the SRS unit. The only way to check this is with a scan tool of some sort. I used a Solus Pro. The scanner flashes slowly to indicate the first part of the numerical error code and then uses a second quick flash for the second number of the code. I recommend that you check the code and go from there. I'm guessing that it will show a "non-functional" code; this is a common problem. I had to replace the whole SRS unit in the 2000 Accord EX I worked on last week.

Wow, would you mind sharing the cost of replacing the whole SRS unit?

Mine also has that light on! 2000 Acura TL

Hi, past few months I had the SRS light on my 2002 Honda accord coupe EX 2.3L, I bought one of the best code readers says passenger side air bag problem resistance, history is I had the seat taken out to replace the drive motor by a person not real maechanic, tried the wire jumping method on internet and my new scanner, code would not reset, today I was thinking, since they talk about the seatbelt latching, so what I did pull out the retractable seat belt all the way till it would click and did that 2-3 times and let it re-track, bingo it worked. Lot of money saved.

da

Does it turn off by itself when you do that or do you have to reset it?

da

What was cost buddy I have 250,000 miles I don't want to sink to much into it... Honda oddesy 2001, thanks...

O.K., here is the DIY for resetting the memory for your SRS Light. Your SRS Light may trigger and remain illuminated for several reasons. Some of these are:

  • Unplugging your gauge cluster
  • Unplugging your SRS harness(es) when you remove your seats
  • Unplugging any other SRS plugs and turning your ignition on

These instructions are intended ONLY for resetting your SRS Indicator Light when it is triggered for the reasons listed above. Your SRS Light may indicate a more serious problem that should be evaluated by your local Authorized Honda/Acura Technician. Remember, that airbag may save your life or the life of someone you care about so don't disregard that indicator light unless you are sure that it triggered for some other reason. That being said, here are some pics and instructions for resetting the SRS Light (note: These pics are from a 6th Gen Accord EX Coupe 4AT. The MES plug may be located in a different location on other models. Make sure you know what you are unplugging. There are no contacts inside the port that the MES Plug plugs into.)

Tools needed:

  • Flashlight (if needed to search for MES Plug under dash)
  • 2 1/2 ft. piece of small gauge speaker wire (insulation stripped off ends)

1. Locate MES Plug. It should be located near the driver's side fuse panel under the dash. The harness is yellow with two wires.

2. Unplug the MES Plug. It should look like this.

3. Insert one end of speaker wire into MES Plug (one wire in each contact)

4. Follow this sequence of shorting the other two leads of the speaker wire and turning the ignition to "on" (not accessory, not start)

  • Short and hold the leads while you turn the ignition to on. The SRS Light will illuminate for a few seconds then go off.
  • When the SRS Light goes off, unshort the wires. The SRS Light will come back on.
  • Short and hold the wires again. The SRS Light will go off.
  • When the SRS Light goes off, unshort the wires. The SRS Light will blink twice.
  • Turn the ignition off.
  • Start engine as normal. The SRS Light should illuminate for a couple of seconds as normal and then go off.
  • This series of shorting/unshorting needs to take place within a 4 second window of the SRS Light going on/off each time.

5. Sound easy enough? Should take 15 seconds or so for the whole procedure. Good luck.

To reset the cluster lights, a person can simply disconnect their car's battery for 10 minutes, then reconnect it. If the SRS light comes on again, it means that there's an issue with the system - which could be anything from the horn, to a fuse, to a relay, to the SRS reel, to the airbag (but the airbag has its own cluster light, I think).

da

I tried disconnecting the battery even for 2 hours but it didn't work !

Mario's solution fixed mine :P THANKS

da

I'm having this same problem. Thank you to everyone for posting instructions. I'm doing this as soon as get home for work today. Take care !!!

It is never a good idea to intentionally short anything electronic. I tried the above method on my 1996 Honda accord & the SAS light went off . The next day I drove my car to work & when I went to start it on my lunch break it wouldn't start. To make a long story short my car wouldn't start after shorting out the SRS light when you short the SRS it fries your main control module under the steering wheel which will cause your car to not start.

Never Short out anything Electronic it will not fix the problem it will make the situation worse.

I can't speak for a 96 accord, but my '00 accord has this issue and "shorting" the connector is exactly what happens but I would use the term "jumpering" and not shorting. "Shorting" implies that the electronic circuit failed when electricity short circuits across the load. In the case of the SRS reset, you are using a jumper to communicate the reset sequence to the module. I bought the official "tool" from Honda for this task and all it is is a connector with a wire connecting the two terminals. The reset method has you connecting and reconnecting the circuit which can be difficult. I inserted a ON/OFF switch on the wire so now all I have to do is toggle the switch. Again, not sure on the '96 accord if this is the right tool, but for the '98-'02 generation this is the correct safe method.

Paid much? Pay attention to names and unnecessary details. This is designed to scare you and have you take your car to a shop. You can overload lots of things on a car and 99.9% of the time, it will just burn a fuse out. That's what they are there for. To protect electronics in case of overload. In cases like these sensor plugs, the term "short out" is just a figure of speech. When you plug a diagnostics unit into the old school Honda 2-hole plugs, you are essentially "shorting it out" too...but these are not powered plugs like that. It's not like you're shorting out a 12v power supply to your stereo. Don't be afraid to work on your own car.

Absolutely! I am very cautious on suggestions, for the same reason. "Fix One Problem, Cause A Bigger One".

I just had both recalls repaired on my Civic yesterday. I was wondering if that should make the SRS light go off - it had been on for a long time prior to that. So far it's still on.

I had a problem with my SRS light turning on in my 2000 Honda Accord. One problem that caused it was a problem with my seatbelt, and it was covered by Honda. You may want to take this in to a dealer, and get them to check if it is that specific problem with seatbelt. They fixed it for me for free, because it was a problem reported by the factory.

I just called a Honda dealer about the SRS light coming on in my Civic. I'm assuming it's airbags (as we all know about the recall I'm sure) and they want to charge me for a the code reading - then said if it's JUST the airbag then they'll fix it for free. Now, my car type and model is UNDER RECALL. Shouldn't this all be done free period? The SRS light IS on? Did you pay?

da

Kelli I have the same problem and am currently sitting in the dealer after two hours of waiting. The service member told me the SRS and airbag recall that they did work on a few months are completely unrelated...uhhhh what? I thought it should all be covered as well since it's a safety issue.

da

Hey Ali, I called Honda's 800 # they have for recall's (I just Googled it, came right up) they told me all the work that has been done to my car..seriously, like EVERYTHING. Turns out my car had been brought in for the air bags FOUR times through the past couple of years & since it had already been brought in, repaired, etc - that was all the recall was to cover. So glad I called & didn't go to dealer! What a ripoff...wanted to charge me like $150 - had my friend check it w/ a code reader the next day...SRS light is gone. No problems since.

- Hope it went okay for u at the dealer and they didn't try to rip u off, like they were going to do to me...sucks having to deal with people trying to rip u off :/

da

I sent in my 2002 Honda Accord to fix the airbag recall. As soon as I collected my car and drove away from the dealership SRS light came on. Not realizing it was related to airbag so I didn't go back right away to seek answer. I only called the dealer 3 days later and was told SRS is not related to airbag recall. What the Fxxk! They wanted me to pay for diagnostic and fix it if necessary. Honda is a ripped . They caused more problem when I brought in my car due to airbag recall!! And told me they don't cover it.

da

Im also here at a dealer ship waiting for my airbag to be fixed due to the recall. They just came in and told me about the srs light being on. They said alot of people think that since the recall the srs light is related but its not. They wont fix it for free and said it would be $55 just to do a diagnostic test. I was one of the people that thought the srs light was related to the recall. I dont see how they can know for sure if its not. It would seem they would go hand in hand. I told him i wasnt prepared to pay for it and would have to come back to get the test done. Now i have to figure this out.

You can't remove the bulb because they will be looking for it to light up on initial startup. Also very unsafe

I had this problem too. Tried the battery thing, the MES plug light reset and basically nothing works, Most cheap scanners including the Snapon Solus-Pro won't read air bag .or abs codes. I bought the OTC model for $111 and found out the Air bag module was bad, Tried the junk yard route and learned that if it's not from the exact car model with the same equipment you wasted your money. I decided to pull the bulb. There are other posts on how to do this. If your in an area that requires safety inspection this won't work cause they look for the light to come on during the start up self test but if not and you don't mind not knowing if the air bags will deploy this is the only guaranteed way to get rid of that pesky light. By the way, about 6 months later I got t-boned and the side airbag deployed. Here is the link on how to change/delete the bulb http://www.odyclub.com/forums/28-1995-19... works on most Accords and Civics also.

Hello. I recently had this issue with my 1999 Civic SiR, and it turned out the issue was that the internal contact points of the car horn had corroded. Replacing the car horn, and then resetting the SRS light by disconnecting the battery for about 10 or so minutes fixed things.

If the car has been in an accident and the air bags went off will the srs light stay on simply because they didn't reset the system or would it most likely be that the scum dealer I bought this pos from didnt even replace the air bags or anything from the accident... Considering I didn't even know it was on an accident until I went to register it and when I asked him to fix srs and check engine light before I would buy and he just reset the battery and kept the cat for an extra week and made it seem like he actially did something lol .... My own fault for being lazy yes I know but hey I own it now and need to fix

you can also check the seat belt sensor under the chair , 90% of this problems in the 2000s accord are because of this belt sensor, you can check it by disable it manually ant if the SRS light turns off it means you can solve it by changing the sensor or just remove it.

note: this sensor work to make the airbag work on the side that passenger are setting however if you remove the sensor all airbags will be working in the accident regardless if there is someone beside the passenger or not.
