Ethernet on but, not working

Hi, This started with a spill (coke I think) I opened it up (this unit sat for about two years before I received it) and seen drops of coke on the optic drive, two drops on the cooling fan. I looked at the board I could not see anything on it. I opened the optic drive did not see any coke drops or stains of coke. I removed and cleaned the keyboard for sticky keys it now is working. Started it up and optic drive spun up went to the install long story short here could not find the hard drive. removed old hard drive installed a new one started back up hard drive found loaded o/s. connected to the internet via cable connection for updates will not go to the internet. went to system preferences/network it says currently active and has a green light then I went to network utility under network interface (enO) states link status Active, link speed 100Mb, it has a IP address yet I can still not get to the internet and I the internet/line cables are all ok because I checked with another computer and I can get to the internet with it.what is going on?

What is the ip address? Is it one that your router/isp gives out via dhcp, or is it one of the ones that OSX automatically? If it's getting dhcp from the router then you will know that your hardware is fine.

Have you plugged that exact same cable into another box to verify that the cable works? Have you checked the security settings on the router to see if it's filtering by mac address and not letting your machine connect out?

I clicked on the "Renew DHCP lease" button (in system preferences - network) I'm not sure but I guess that's from the ISP.

I have my computer and I used that cable to connect the macbook and when the macbook would not go to the internet I hooked it back into my iMac no troubles it went to the internet.

I went to our local library and was able to use airport so, I down loaded up-dates returned home plugged it in and clicked on safari it went to the internet via ethernet it was on for awhile and it went out then later it returned and now back out.

rj713 that is almost correct. Clicking "renew DHCP lease" button WILL release it just fine, regardless what your ISP may have said.

What happens though is that some ISPs will associate a given IP address with your NIC card's Mac address. If your ISP only allows you one IP address AND you don't have a router between your computer and your cable modem to provide NAT addressing then this can be an issue. It's a common problem. It will look like only one computer can get to the internet.

So in this situation, if that's what's going on here, then the ISP in an effort to only let ONE computer use their service, is only letting the iMac through and blocking everything else.

Fortunately this information is almost always stored temporarily in your cable modems ram. Simply turning the modem off for 10 seconds or so then powering everything back with the other machine plugged into it will fix the problem for most people.

If this is indeed the issue then a more permanent fix would be getting a home router such as an Airport Base Station and connecting to that instead of directly to the cable modem. Otherwise you'll have to power cycle the cable modem every time you want to use a different computer.

Could be--I'm using a router now and not having any further problems. However in my case powering the modem off did not help with renewing the lease. Ralph

It's best to reset ALL the network devices. Turn'em all off first. Then reboot them starting with the modem (waiting for it to fully boot before turning on the next device), then the router, then any switch or hub, etc. The reboot your Mac or "REnew DHCP lease". I also find it helpful to enter the OpenDNS servers in the DNS field: 208.67.220.220 and 208.67.222.222.

That did it I hooked the macbook up reset the modem. the ISP and the macbook did the rest. I have been on line with it now for two hours. Proof now that I need a router to do this in the future. Thanks to all

I had the same problem of not going online with a new (to me) Mac. I had to have the ISP reset the DHCP address. They explained for some reason Mac's don't release or renew leases (their story--I have no idea if its valid). In any case when they reset the lease from their end everything started working again. Why don't you check with your ISP about reseting your system from their end. Ralph

Today I went to our local Library and was able to connect there with airport so, I down loaded the updates and returned home and plugged in the ethernet cable and I was able to get on line. Now it's back to not wanting to go to the internet. I thought maybe the up dates fixed the problems but now I'm back to wondering why?
