Water Damage

my son spilled juice on my macbook pro, the keys are stiffish and the mouse click pad doesnt work, im able to plug an external mouse in but i think due to the damage of the internal mouse it selects things randomly. other then that the computer works fine(im typing on it....) what parts would i need to repair it because if i send it back to apple and any apple service stores they would charge me $1300.

The keyboard should be replaced and that means that the MBP top case must be completely taken apart to reach the keyboard. You will then be able to clean all internal components that had juice spilled on and test them. Since juice contains sugar it will take a good clean up and you'll be lucky if the logic board is intact. I hope it is. Was it a full glass of juice or just a small spill ?

Go to your system preferences for "Universal Access" and on the "Mouse and Trackpad" tab, check the box for "ignore trackpad when mouse is present". Screenshot here:

Unfortunately, thanks to the "unibody-ness" of this model, the keyboard and trackpad are built right into the upper case of the laptop. To replace it you have to pretty much completely dissasemble the entire machine. iFixit classifies this repair as "very difficult" though it can be done. You would need to buy the top case in order to do it, and paying someone to do it will be expensive because of the challenge of the task.

If disabling the trackpad brings your mousing back to normal then it sounds like the only other problem is the sticky keys on the keyboard. If you are careful, the tops of the keys can be taken off of the laptop without taking the whole thing apart. You need to be very careful with this as they are easy to break, but you may be able to take the bad ones off and do some (very careful) spot cleaning to keep them from sticking.

You DO NOT have to disassemble your Macbook Pro. Just go to Radio Shack and purchase a can of NON CONDUCTIVE COMPONENT SPRAY and spray down the keyboard and everywhere that you can find an opening. Don't worry, remember it's NON CUNDUCTIVE Spray which means that electricity can not discharge so all of your internal components whould be safe. I recently had the same issue with my 2010 Macbook Pro i7 which you already know cost a small fortune. I used the spray and allowed the MBP to rest for 1 hour preferably in a warm location and that was it..Keyboard works, mouse pad works, usb works...Don't pay Apple $1200 for something you can do for your which cost only $12 per can.

I would not recommend this procedure. Disassemble the unit and clean it properly so no damaging residue remains.

I suggest you stop using your MacBook immediately, disconnect the battery and charger until you can clean the logic board.

It's a typical story...

1) liquid spill

2) panic

2) Oh, it works! Panic over.

3) it stops working after 2-3 weeks

4) by this time permanently energised power supply areas on the logic board are corroded beyond repair

You need to clean your logic board immediately. Good wash in hot water and 24h drying should be OK.

Here it is! Ideally, you will be fine with just a replacement upper case.
