White screen hp laptop

Hi

A couple of weeks ago my laptop screen started going white when it wasn't in a very specific orientation. I had a presentation to do and used an external screen which was fine. I habe not seen any slowing down of the function.

So I took it in to a repair place. They rang me up today saying it was a motherboard issue and it would cost $700. I don't really believe them. I thought that a motherboard issue would not be affected by the orientation of the screen, and would have the same issue with an external screen in addition to slowing down various computer functions.

So... am I being ripped off?

Thank you in advance

Sorry to say, but yes you are.

The parts list for your model from the HP Parts Store does not provide the price for the systemboard. The part number listed is 774606-501. An eBay search for the part number shows various motherboard prices. Of the two listed as new, they are priced for under $100.

I would ask for a breakdown of the parts and labor if you are doubtful of the price.

At the time of your post, the cost may have been higher, but you also need to consider if they ordered direct from HP or a partner and if they are warranting the part if it fails within a certain period of time.
