My power button on my Samsung Galaxy S5 is not working. Is it a firmware issue or do I need to replace the power button flex cable? If so can someone please tell me how the plastic cover comes off. Not sure which way to remove it.

A german forum user DerGlonntaler used this trick: photo of the backside
He used a piece of post-it paper to stick it on the place where the power button is.
The backcover of the phone produces more pressure with this trick and it should fix the problem.
I tried it myself and it's working so far :)

Holy crap, dude. That actually worked.
I just held down that part of the phone with a finger and pressed power as normal together. It worked!

Sorry, this will be too late for you, but gonna leave this here in case someone else searches for it.
Fixed this problem tonight. Apparently, tightening up the phone fixes this (the power button unit does not attach to the rest of the phone, it merely comes into contact with the board through proximity). You can tighten the black screws on the motherboard (hard) or press hard on the upper left hand corner when taking the back cover off where the battery and sim are (easy - no real disassembly required).
For a REAL and PERMANENT fix, you can totally disassemble everything and pry the tiny metal prongs in the power button area to a higher angle, ensuring that they connect effortlessly. This is considerably more difficult, but will prevent the problem from returning- FOR GOOD.

this worked for me on my galaxy s5. i dropped it and the power button stopped working, but if i squeezed tight on the phone it seemed to fix it

My button fell off and got lost. I just bought a new one in a kit from Amazon, but I have no idea how to replace it. There are no instructions in the package, just the power button and the volume button. Bing and Google searches are no help because these numbnuts confuse the button with the switch inside, so they post videos about replacing the button when they mean the switch.
I would appreciate help from anyone who knows how to replace the power button.

Yes, this paper method worked for me, BUT wait, there's more. If you simply put a little finger pressure on the back of the phone right behind the power button and hit the power, it will also turn the phone on. Kinda a hassle but works without having to take the back off.

Could restore the phone to eliminate software.
And to get into the phone is not easy, the screen has to come off, the screws are behind the lcd.
Suggest to watch a few videos on this, and I use playing cards when removing the screen for glass replacement. And take your time!
But I would start with the restore first.

Hi
I have tried directly on the motherboard. but even with connecting those two connection point, the on and off function still not working (tried new flex as well). Is there any way around that? (phone still turns on ok with vol down+home button+computer method)

you have to replace the micro switch. it it stuck in the depressed position. that's why if you pop the battery and put it back, you see Samsung logo flash, then nothing more. Somebody called it a Boot loop. like when you hold the power button down for a long time, it gets ready to shutdown.

that guy ripped the micro switch off the board. and then you can start it with the home+vol down method. means the power button was like it was "shorted".
I will also add, that when my power button was stuck/shorted, I would not see the charging battery cartoon. Then, I tried like micro tapping on the power button, until it seemed to un-stuck. At that point plugging the charging cable showed the battery on the screen. This implies, that cleaning the button with isopropyl alcohol/acetone may help. But I have not seen this from any other accounts.
After all, when the power button stops working, the human tendency is to try pressing harder.

After reading all posts, I disassembled my s5 where I found a floating miniature resistor blocking the contacts on power button. Not sure where the extra resistor came from, possibly an extra from the factory. This also bent one of the two power button contacts. I bent the contact back into place, then reassembled. All good now.

I also pressed on the part where the german dude stuck the paper and now the power button works again.
My phone fell on the ground, when I pressed that part of the phone I could feel something click or snap back in and the power button works again.
It is also possible to start this phone without the power button. Hold the volume down and home button while connecting it to an USB port of a computer ( I needed somebody else for that)
The phone will start in download mode, but if you press volume down once more it reboots and it starts!

It may sounds like a scary solution, but it worked for me… TWICE!
My wife's Samsung S5 power button stopped working. So she has to make sure that her phone is always charged. But it happened when the phone got completely drained out. We charged it.. but couldn't start it with the power button. When we press the home or volume buttons we could just see the battery icon and the percentage. After trying so many options we end up with a unique solution.
I took out one cotton ear bud.. dipped it in a nail polish remover and pressed the bud around the gaps of the power button and within a second it started. I think it's just got connected with circuit inside the phone. It worked for me twice and the phone is working fine.

hmmm....acetone dissolving guck around the button.
mine does feel like the button is stuck depressed.
however, there is a method to power up using the down volume+home button, and/or popping the battery out and back in quickly.

Hi folks
The switch on my S5 doesn't work too. I opened the midframe where the switch is located and tried to insert a new one. If the smartphone is left overnight, you can turn it on exactly once and then not again. It also works when you connect it to the charging cable. The home button and the volume buttons work normally. What kind of problem can that be? Thank you very much for a solution.

could be the sticky, gucked up button. try cleaning it with a swab and isopropyl alcohol. overnight, the button frees up from the guck. then as you press it repeatedly, it gets stuck again in the guck.

My wife's Galaxy S5 was doing the same thing; this fixed the problem. I suspect I know what is causing the problem. My wife is OCD and tends to press the power button too firmly. I think that caused it to depress too far and eventually stopped making connection with whatever it was supposed to. Thanks for this fix; she loves this phone and didn't want to have to get another ... believe it or not.

Do you need to replace the BUTTON or the SWITCH? The BUTTON is what you press and the SWITCH is the part inside the case that actully turns the phone on and off.

I was removing my finger sensor and when I assembled everything back my phone won't turn on. Without the finger sensor would the phone turn on?
