Background
The Riddell Speedflex, introduced in 2014, was a product of Riddell's effort to create a safe yet comfortable-designed football helmet. The Riddell Speedflex (model number R41109) was designed to combat the ongoing and controversial issue of concussions, as Riddell's previous model, the Riddell Speed, seemed to be outdated. The Riddell SpeedFlex quickly gained popularity amongst all levels of football, as it had proven to be the safest helmet on the market.
The Riddell Speedflex comes in both youth and adult sizes (with adult XL being the biggest) and, on average, weighs 4.8 pounds. This includes all aspects of the helmet, being the facemask, padding, shell, and chinstrap. Furthermore, the defining part of the Riddell Speedflex is its "Flex" system, which is a hexagon-shaped cutout on the crown of the helmet. Alongside that, the Speedflex can be distinguished by its cam-loc chinstrap mechanism, where one can press a button and adjust the chinstrap to their liking.
As of 2022, Riddell came out with a newer version of the Speedflex, the "Riddell Axiom." This new design supposedly offers more protection than the traditional Speedflex while also offering more cosmetic appeal. However, many still prefer the Riddell Speedflex as of 2025 due to some complications within the Riddell Axiom. The Riddell Speedflex continues to be the most popular helmet across all levels of football (with 2/3 of the NFL wearing it) and will continue to do so because of its reliability and safety.
Indentification
The Riddell Speedflex has a distinct hexagon-shaped cutout on the top of the front crown of the outer shell. It is right above the Riddell printed logo across the front bumper. You can also find the helmet's modern ratchet-style chinstrap mechanism, the cam-loc, on each side of the helmet. To ensure identification of the device, you can look inside the helmet itself near the padding for a sticker that includes the model number.
