Identification and Background
Confusion may arise when distinguishing the D40 from the D40x. Unfortunately, the cameras are only distinguishable from the outside by their emblem located on the front near the base of the lens. On the other hand, identifying the camera apart from similar models is easy due to its large red triangle located just below the power switch.
The D40 was announced on November 16, 2006 and is the successor to the D50. The D40 is classified as an entry level DSLR and was the first Nikon DSLR to not feature an in-body focus motor.
