The Garmin Drive 50LM is a portable GPS navigation system released by Garmin in 2016 as part of their Garmin Drive series. The Garmin Drive 50LM has free map updates for North America. Which is what ‘LM’ stands for, “Lifetime Maps”. The device has features such as driver awareness, which features alerts for sharp turns, and alerts for red light cameras. It also has fatigue warnings, which is when the device recommends rest stops for those driving long distances. It also includes a microSD card slot, for those looking to store optional maps or other data.
This device was the first made to allow for some of the first stand alone navigation devices, unlike Google maps, it could work without the need for cell service and has lane assist.
The successors of the Garmin Drive 50 LM were the 51 LM, coming out in 2017, the 52 in 2019, and the 53 in 2021, which had updated maps with prebuilt directory of national parks and city milestones along routes.
