Device won’t turn on

When you press the power switch to the on position (I symbol), the orbit sander does not turn on.

Power Switch is broken

Verify the power switch is not damaged. Check for visible damage or loose sliding action. If it is damaged, you will need to ++replace the power switch.++

Power Cord issues

A quick check of the outlet can determine if it is the issue and/or a check of the Power Cord for damage. If the Power Cord has cracks, exposed wires or other damage, you will need to ++replace the Power Cord.++

Loose Traction Pad

Pad is not adhering to device.

Velcro Pad is Dirty

Check to make sure the pad’s velcro is adhering to the device. If not, check to make sure the velcro on the pad and device are clean and free of dirt. Clean the device’s velcro gently with a spray bottle of water.

Velcro Pad is Damaged

First loosen the screws on the velcro pad.  Take off the velcro pad and use a vacuum or a suction device to remove dust from screws and screw holes on sander.  Replace and position velcro pad so that the pad lines up with the screw holes and tighten each screw a little bit at a time until tight to ensure even pressure over the whole velcro pad to the sander.

Device overheating

The Orbit Sander begins to heat up quickly or unexpectedly gives off a burning smell.

Overuse

The Orbit Sander begins to heat up quickly, after a prolonged period of use. Allow the Orbit Sander to sit for awhile and cool off before attempting to use again.

Vents Blocked or Covered

Make sure to keep hands off of air vents. Periodically check that nothing is blocking the air vents. If the vents are blocked due to dust make sure to clean it out before using the Orbit Sander again. Then verify dust bag exhaust is clear as well, remove the dust bag from the sander and make sure the exhaust is clear of debris and the bag isn’t overflowing with dust.

Bad Brushes or Assembly

After repeated use (perhaps faulty) brushes or the armature assembly might need to be replaced. The Orbit Sander heating up quickly is a sign that this might need to happen. Refer to the ++replacement guide for Brushes and Assembly.++

Bad Motor

IF all other troubleshooting has been attempted and the issue persists, the motor might be faulty. If you notice a burning smell or sparks, it is very likely the issue. To fix this issue, you will need to ++replace the motor.++

Weak or No Power

The Orbit Sander turns on but does not spin or spin fast enough when being applied to the work surface.

Bad Power Source

Check the outlet connection, make sure the sander is plugged into the outlet. It can become loose and cause this issue. Then check the Power Cord, if it is damaged, refer to the ++Power Cord replacement guide.++

Too much pressure

You might be putting too much pressure on the work surface. While maintaining a firm grip on the Orbit Sander, avoid blocking vents, release some of the downward pressure you are putting onto the work surface.

Bad Motor

IF all other troubleshooting has been attempted and the issue persists, the motor might be faulty. If you notice a burning smell or sparks, it is very likely the issue. To fix this issue, you will need to ++replace the motor.++

Traction Pad Ineffective

Your Orbit Sander is not effectively sanding the intended surface.

Not enough pressure

If your orbit sander has a moderately new sander pad on it and the orbit sander is still ineffective, ensure that you are applying enough pressure to the sander.  This provides increased friction from the orbital sander to the surface which will increase effectiveness. NOTE: Make sure to maintain a proper firm grip on the Orbit Sander to avoid losing control or causing damage.

My Ryobi Sander is not holding the sandpaper in place.

The black bar that holds the sandpaper in place on a spring is broken. Is there a replacement piece on this?
