Powerbook will not turn on

Charge the battery

The battery may not be charged. Plug a power adapter cord into the laptop and connect to an outlet for an extended period of time, allowing the battery to charge.

Battery not properly seated

Make sure the battery is properly seated in the battery compartment.

Resetting the Powerbook

Press the RESET button located on the back panel marked by a circle with a vertical line through it.

Cannot Eject a Floppy Disk

Restart the laptop

Restart the laptop and try ejecting the floppy disk again.

Disk may be stuck

Your disk may be stuck. You may manually eject it by placing the end of a straightened paper clip into the small hole near the opening of the drive, and push firmly until disk is ejected.

Track pad Malfunctioning

Use one finger

Make sure to only use one, clean, dry finger on the trackpad.

Computer may be slow

A program may be busy; wait a few moments and try again.

Restart the laptop

Try to restart the laptop because the track pad might not have registered during start up.

Replacing the track pad

If none of the above solutions work, the track pad may need to be removed and replaced. Follow the instructions of this guide.

The Computer Freezes

Closing programs

Try to close any programs that are running to unfreeze the computer.

Force quitting programs

Force quit the program by pressing the Command, Option and Escape keys on the keyboard. Select the force quit option in the box that appears.

System errors

If the display says system error, try resetting the computer by pressing the reset button on the back of the computer.

Replacing the ram

If the previous suggestions do not work you may need to reset or replace the parameter RAM (PRAM).

Keyboard not Working

Restarting laptop

If the keyboard is not working, try restarting the laptop as the keyboard may not have registered during start up.

Clean the keyboard

Try to clean the keyboard and make sure its not dirty.

Downloading the latest software

Try downloading the latest software for the keyboard on the product website and manually reinstall the drivers.

Replace the keyboard

If none of these work, you may need to remove and/or replace your keyboard. Refer to our guide here on how to disassemble a 5300cs keyboard.

The computer makes weird noises when booting up.

Use disk tools CD

If four tones are heard, start the computer with the Disk Tools CD that came with the computer.

Resetting the RAM

To reset the RAM restart the computer. Immediately after hear the start up tone, simultaneously press down the command, Option, P and R keys. Hold down the keys until the start up tone repeats itself three times, then release them. When the computer shuts down turn it on again, with the RAM reset.

Replacing the RAM

You may need to replace the parameter RAM also known as the RAM.

The charger is not charging the battery.

Charger or outlet may not be working

Try using a different charger or power outlet to make sure that both are in working order.

Battery may need to be replaced

Replace the battery by following this battery guide.
