Laptop is Overheating

When running, the laptop becomes too hot.

Dirty Fan

A common cause of overheating is dirt in the fans. To get to the fans, turn the laptop over and take off the back cover with a screwdriver. Once the back has been snapped off, carefully remove the fan cover and use compressed air to clean the fan of dirt and dust. Refer to the Fan Replacement Guide for more information on removing the back cover and the location of the fan.

Faulty Fan

If the fan has been cleaned and overheating issues continue, the fan performance may be the issue. To replace a defective fan with a new one, refer to the Fan Replacement Guide.

Faulty Battery

A faulty battery may also be the cause of an overheating laptop. To replace the battery, please refer to the Battery Replacement Guide.

Unexpected Computer Shut Down

Laptop will turn off during use without notice.

Faulty Hard Disk Drive

Computer is Running Slowly

Laptop responds slowly or is unable to open multiple applications.

Background Programs

Multiple programs running in the background is the most common reason the laptop will run too slow. To disable programs, open the task manager and right click programs with high CPU and memory usage, then select "End Task".

Not Enough Memory

Computer delays may also be the result of a full memory disk. To upgrade the RAM in this laptop, please refer to the RAM Replacement Guide.

Faulty Hard Disk Drive

Problems with the hard drive may be slowing the laptop's performance. To replace a faulty hard drive, refer to the Hard Drive Replacement Guide.

Optical Drive will not read disc

When trying to run a CD or DVD, the Optical Drive will not read the disc.

Scratched CD/DVD

Unless a CD or DVD is brand new, one cause of the disc not being read is that the disc may be damaged or dirty to the point where it cannot be read by the eye. In this case, simply clean the CD and retry reading the disc.

Dirty reader eye

The most common problem that occurs when an Optical Drive cannot read a disc is that the reading eye in the drive is dirty. An easy fix to try is to take a can of compressed air and carefully blow air into the drive when it is open to try and clean the eye.

Faulty optical drive

If cleaning the reading eye did not fix the issue, then the Optical Drive is faulty. To replace the optical drive, follow the Optical Drive Replacement Guide.

Operating System Failure

When the computer is powered on, Windows fails to boot.

Operating System files are corrupted

To verify that the operating system on your laptop is corrupted, you can run a live disc of Linux to verify that your software is intact. Then do a fresh installation of Windows to clear out any corrupt files.

No Operating system to boot

If the message 'No boot media' appeared after the SSD was replaced, then a new version of Windows will need to be installed. Copying the Windows files from the old SSD can also be done if it was functioning before replacement.

No screen on boot

When powered on, the laptop screen does not turn on.

Necessary BIOS update

One possible fix for this issue is to update the BIOS of the laptop to its latest version. The newest version can be downloaded at https://www.msi.com/Laptop/support/GE72-...

Graphics driver reinstall

Go to device manager and uninstall all Nvidia related content, then download the newest driver from https://www.nvidia.com/download/index.as...
