If your HP ProBook 650 G3 laptop doesn’t turn on immediately when or when it does, the battery drains quickly, this page may have a solution.
Getting Started
The HP Diagnostics tool is a tool within the operating system that checks for drivers, hardware faults and provides support tips. The tool checks the system hardware and components.
- Download the HP PC Hardware Diagnostic Tool to diagnose the issue. Once the tool is installed, launch the tool.
- On the main menu, select System Tests.
- Select the System Fast Test option, and then select run.
- If a component fails a test, take note of the failure code, this can be provided to HP for further support.
- If no system component fails, run the Extensive Test.
Another way to test the battery’s performance:
- When you are signed in, use the Windows Search feature and look for Command Prompt. Once you find the application, right click and select run as administrator.
- Once the Command Prompt opens up, type powercfg /batteryreport and press enter.
- Once it completes, open the HTML file and compare the Full Charge Capacity against the Design Capacity. The HTML file should be found in c:\Windows\System32. This should tell you how much the battery health has depleted compared to how much it should have.
- If the battery capacity has dropped to 80% or less of the original capacity, proceed to replace the battery.
Too Many Background Apps
- Use the windows search feature and search for Task Manager by pressing Ctrl+Alt+Delete, Right clicking the windows icon, or Ctrl+Shift+Esc as a shortcut directly to Task Manager.
- To find out what processes are taking up the most computer power and memory, click on the CPU and Memory Tabs.
- The items that populate on top will be the programs that are taking up the most energy. To close these programs, right click and select “End Task”. Do not close tasks that have the Windows gear icons, these are essential services Windows needs to run properly.
Incorrect Power Usage Setting
Power Usage settings manage how a computer consumes energy. These settings can be changed depending on your needs.
- Open the Settings App > Select System > Select Power & Battery.
- From here you can change the Power Mode to balanced, power saver, and high performance.
- From this same menu you should also see an option to enable the battery saver mode option. This automatically limits background activity and reduces performance.
- Other settings that can help mitigate the battery drain: Lowering your Screen Brightness, Toggling off the keyboard backlight, and changing the screen timeout settings.
Outdated BIOS or Firmware
Outdated drivers can cause poor power management. Device drivers are specialized software programs that act as a translator between Windows and the Hardware. The BIOS is firmware that gives Windows instructions on how to utilize its hardware.
It is very important that the computer is not shut down or restart during this process.Plug in your AC Adapter while performing these steps and ensure it does not get disconnected.
- Update the BIOS and Drivers: Go to the HP Support Page for the HP ProBook 650 G3.
- From the support page select software and drivers.
- On this next page select the BIOS option and download the latest firmware.
- Once this completes, select the Driver Chipset option and download all of the latest files.
- Once all of these files are downloaded open the .exe files.
- Follow the installation prompts to complete the BIOS and Firmware updates. Rebooting only when prompted.
Drivers Are Out of Date
Device Manager is a Windows utility used to manage, configure and troubleshoot hardware on your device. It is a central interface between Windows and the device’s hardware.
Calibrate the battery by fully charging it to 100%, then let it drain to 0%. This normally resolves inaccurate percentage readings.
- If the issue persists then on the windows search feature look for Device Manager. Once you see the application listed, right click the application and run as administrator.
- Once it opens, expand the Batteries section. On here, right click all listed items and select: Properties > Driver > Uninstall Device. ******
- Once all items are deleted, reboot your device and the drivers will automatically be reinstalled.
Battery Failure
If no other causes are identified, the battery may have reached the end of its lifespan and will need to be replaced.
