HP ProBook 450 G6 Touchpad Is Unresponsive
The touchpad is not responsive from the gestures where the cursor isn’t input on the screen from the user’s finger movements and doesn’t move in any direction. It neither registers clicks, so it can’t double click commands either. If the touchpad on your HP laptop is not working correctly, try the following troubleshooting steps.
Touchpad Needs to be Enabled
Some HP laptops allow the touchpad to be enabled or disabled directly from the touchpad surface.
1. Locate the upper-left corner of the touchpad. ⏎
2. Double-tap the corner to disable the touchpad. ⏎
3. Double-tap again to re-enable it.
If the touchpad was accidentally disabled, this should restore normal functionality.
Outdated Drivers or Corrupted Application Files
A hard reset can clear temporary software issues that may prevent the touchpad from working.
1. Turn off the laptop. ⏎
2. Unplug the AC adapter. ⏎
3. Remove any discs from the optical drive. ⏎
4. Remove any memory cards from the card reader. ⏎
5. Disconnect all external devices such as printers, scanners, external drives, or USB flash drives. ⏎
6. With the power adapter still disconnected, press and hold the power button for about 15 seconds. ⏎
7. Reconnect the AC adapter. ⏎
8. Turn the laptop back on.
Built-in Defective Component Testing/Isolating
Testing the touchpad using built-in diagnostics can help determine if the issue is hardware related.
1. Turn the computer off. ⏎
2. Turn it back on and immediately press the Esc key repeatedly (about once per second). ⏎
3. When the startup menu appears, press F2 to open the diagnostics menu. ⏎
4. Select Component Tests. ⏎
5. Choose Mouse/Touchpad. ⏎
6. Select a test and click Run Once. ⏎
7. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the test.
Operating System Needs to be Reset
If the touchpad still does not work, resetting the operating system may resolve software-related problems.
The reset feature in Microsoft Windows reinstalls the operating system and restores the computer to its default configuration.
Before performing a system reset, back up all important files to prevent data loss.
Touch Pad Needs Replacement
1. The ZIF connector must be removed from the cable that connects it with the touchpad. ⏎
2. Afterwards, once the cable is lifted off from the adhesive of the touchpad, you then move the silver tape away from the touchpad. ⏎
3. Finally unscrew the six broad head Philips M2.0×2.0 screws from the touchpad and safely remove the touchpad.
