Buttons sometimes do not work

Your Garmin Rino 700 does not function after you press a button.

Dirt Build Up

There could be minor dirt build up or any outdoor substance residue within your device. You’re going to want to see a replacement guide on our support page so you can get to your buttons to clean them or replace them.

There could also be access rubber that has fallen into the buttons port so you will need to remove that. Reviews have shown using a toothpick has worked and causes no damage to the device.

Speaker is hard to hear sometimes

You have trouble hearing the directions through the audio system.

Motherboard Connection Failure or Damage

If you are having trouble hearing the audio through the Garmin Rino 700 you can use a free program called Garmin Webupdater from Garmin’s website. Note: If this still does not work you will want to contact Garmin Support for assistance at 1-800-800-1020.

Tip: the volume controls can be accessed by tapping the power button when the Rino 700 is turned on. There should be a button to un-mute the volume.

Manual fix option:

  • Step 1: Press the on and off button
  • Step 2: make sure that the radio volume is not in mute
  • Step 3: Turn off and on again

Following these steps correctly has proven to fix the audio problem and you should be able to hear through the system again. If this does not solve the problem then try replacing the motherboard as whole, a step by step process of that can be found here.

Muted or Connected to Another Device

This device is compatible with many headsets and microphone accessories that connect using a 2.5 mm jack. By default the device is set to detect automatically when a new headset or microphone is in range for connection. You may need to check to see if your device is trying to connect to a headset or pair of headphones instead of using the audio system.

NOTE: When a headset is connected the PTT (Push to talk) button must be pressed in order for the device to connect.

You will have to hold down the PTT button to disconnect your device from a headset, pair of headphones or a microphone for you to hear the device through the audio system.

The battery dies too quickly

Your Garmin Rino 700 dies rather quickly.

Screen Brightness

If the device is needing more frequent charging or battery change it could be due to the amount of usage or system settings that have been changed. Some settings that can affect overall battery life are:

  • Backlight brightness
    • Having the backlight set at 100% will drain a lot of battery while the backlight is on.
  • Backlight timeout
    • Sets the length of time before the backlight turns off. A shorter Backlight Timeout can conserve battery.
  • Battery save mode
    • Saves the battery power but turning off the screen when the backlight times out
  • Map drawing speed
    • A faster map drawing speed decreases the battery life.
  • Wifi (only on select handhelds)
    • download updates and/or upload activity data through WiFi. When it is always active, it is continually searching for, and maintaining connections draining your battery
  • Bluetooth features (only on select handhelds)
    •  The drain created by Bluetooth is dependent on enabled Connected Features how often it syncs with the phone

All of these settings can be adjusted in the setup or settings option of your device and should help contribute to your battery accuracy.

Faulty Charger/Battery or Outlet

  • not fully charged
    • allow the device to fully charge without interrupting the charge cycle
  • Allow the device to fully discharge
    • let the device completely die before trying to charge it
  • charger is faulty
  • battery is faulty
    • The battery you have may have a higher rate of self discharge meaning they need to be recharged more often between uses.
    • Part: Garmin Rino 700 Battery Pack

If you are still having trouble with your battery check out our battery replacement guide for a step by step explanation on how to replace the battery as whole.

You could also check the charging port guide for help placing the charging port of the device in hopes of fixing the faulty charger.

Sometimes does not acquire satellite signals

Your Garmin Rino 700 refuses to connect or will not stay connected long to satellites.

May Not be Connecting Correctly

If you are having trouble accessing satellite signals with your device you may not be giving it enough time to acquire the signals. It may take 30-60 seconds after you start up your device for the satellite signal to connect.

  • Go outdoors to an open area
  • If necessary turn on the device
  • Wait while the device searches for satellites
    • A question mark flashes while the device determines your location
  • Select the button to open the status page
  • When the bars are full, the device has acquired satellite signals
  • verify the GPS simulator is turned off
  • take your device out of parking garages and away from tall building or trees
  • remain stationary for several minutes

Device is out of range

  • verify the GPS simulator is turned off
  • take your device out of parking garages and away from tall building or trees
  • remain stationary for several minutes

If you have traveled a long distance from the last time your handheld was powered on and had a satellite signal, it may need additional time to acquire a signal in your new location. As you continue using your handheld in the same area, it will acquire a signal faster.

Updates for the device's GPS Chipset are released periodically. Updates for most devices are done through Garmin Express.

Once updates are finished installing, safely eject the device from your computer and unplug it. Take the device back outside with a clear view for about 20 minutes to see if it acquires. If you are still having trouble and not gaining connection check out the satellite antenna replacement guide for any extra help.

Mapping data is corrupted and will not display correctly

Your Garmin Rino 700 is not displaying mapping data correctly and needs to be reset to factory settings.

Map Errors, Alerts Not Showing

  • Not receiving a satellite signal
  • Restoring the factory default settings
  • Not functioning properly

Before you do a full reset it is recommended that you backup all important data so it is not lost during the reset. You can do so with BaseCamp by following the steps located in the BaseCamp Guide.

Important Note: When resetting to default values contacts will be erased because they cannot be backed up, they can be re-added after.

You may also have to replace the screen of your Garmin Rino 700. To do so follow our step by step replacement guide found here.

System Freezing

  1. Power off the Rino
  2. Press the Menu, Enter, and Power buttons simultaneously
  3. Release all Buttons once the Do you really want to erase all user data? Message appears
  4. Select Yes

The Rino should now be reset. To accurately acquire satellite data you will want to take the Rino outside in an open area for a minimum of 20 minutes.
