Dell Latitude 5500 Overheating
Is your Dell Latitude 5500 overheating? This troubleshooting guide will help you diagnose and address the issue.
Cooling Fan is Obstructed
Your laptop may simply need a change of scenery to get everything back in working order. Ensure that the air vents on your computer, which are located on the back and underside of the device, have ample room to circulate air. Air vents can commonly be blocked when a laptop is placed on a soft surface such as a bed or a sofa or if it’s placed in a cluttered area. Relocate your laptop to a hard, flat surface such as a table or counter and wait a few minutes to see if the issue is resolved.
Dust Accumulation
Over time, dust and other particles may find their way into your device, often through the laptop’s cooling vents. This is a normal occurrence, and a small amount of dust will not impede your device in any meaningful way. If you’ve had your device for a long time or use it in dusty areas, though, then it may have built up enough debris to impact the performance of your device’s cooling fan.
With a can of compressed air, you can dislodge dust and other debris from places where it may be impacting your device. Before attempting any cleaning, power off your laptop and ensure it isn’t plugged in. Remove the bottom panel of your laptop, locate the fan, and hold the blades in place. Spray the compressed air in short bursts, taking care that the can is always positioned upright, until the fan appears to be clean.
Too Many Open Programs
If your laptop is operating more tasks than usual, it will be generating more heat than usual. Open task manager (CTRL+ALT+ESC), to view ongoing operations. If one or more tasks are using a higher CPU usage than warranted, you can right click in task manager and end the task. If you are running a search engine such as Google Chrome or Firefox, and have many tabs open, close the tabs which you are not using.
Your laptop will also generate more heat when charging. If possible, unplug and stop using the laptop to allow the battery to cool down.
Broken Fan
The Dell Latitude 5500 uses a fan to cool itself. If the fan is broken, and not functioning properly, this could cause the laptop to overheat. The easiest way to tell if the fan is working properly is to listen if the fan is on, and if it is, listen for any unusual grinding or clicking sounds. If the fan is on and is making unusual sounds, you should try to clean the fan. If it is still making strange sounds after it has been cleaned, it may need to be replaced.
If you have confirmed the fan is broken, this guide will help you replace it.
Faulty Battery
The Dell Latitude 5500 laptop uses a lithium-ion battery to provide power. Over time, the battery may experience issues such as not holding a charge, draining quickly, or failing to hold a charge properly. In some cases, lithium-ion batteries can swell due to age or heat exposure. If this occurs, the battery should not be used and should be replaced as soon as possible due to safety concerns. If there is no visible swelling, the problem may be related to worn out battery or a faulty charger.
Follow this guide to help you replace your laptop’s battery.
