Dell Latitude 3540 Touchpad Not Responding
Touchpad is not responding and or key presses not registering.
Prior to any replacements or cleaning, follow the steps Before working inside your computer.
Touchpad Button Grimy or Disabled
Touchpad buttons are not responding to user input. This can be caused by two main problems.
- Clean and remove any grim or grease on the touchpad. Sometimes grease or crumbs can prevent the buttons from fully pressing. Restart the computer and check if errors persist. If so, continue to step two.
- The touchpad buttons may have been deactivated. In Search box type main.cpl and select it. Click the Dell Touchpad tab, if not listed then follow these instructions on How to Download and Install Dell Drivers. Click Buttons, toggle the Touchpad Buttons On/Off and click save. Check if errors persist.
Disabled Touchpad
The touchpad may have been disabled. To re-enable go to Settings>Bluetooth & Devices>Touchpad and enable it On.
If the Touchpad setting is already On and is turned Off then the touchpad will be disabled and will not be responsive. This will require an additional mouse to connect to you computer until it is re-enabled.
Outdated Drivers
The touchpad drivers may be outdated or corrupted. In Search box type Device Manager and select it. Select the Human Interfaces Devices drop-down menu and select the HID-compliant touchpad. Right click and choose Uninstall Device and then restart the computer, the computer will automatically reinstall the correct drivers.
Damaged Touchpad
The Touchpad may be damaged or worn out from use and needs a replacement. Find a suitable replacement from your chosen vendor and ensure it meets the specs of the laptop. Follow the instructions Removing the touchpad. Once the old touchpad is removed, follow the instructions Installing the touchpad.
