Device is Overheating/Running Slowly

Fan is dirty or broken

One of the most common and easy-to-fix reasons for old laptops to slow down and overheat as they age is dust accumulation in the rear fan.

Dust builds up in the rear fan over time which can cause it to move slowly or not move at all. This results in the device's temperature not being properly regulated, which can ultimately lead to permanent damage along with the inability of the device to function at all.

If your laptop is 3 or more years old, and you notice it begins to slow down and heat up, this is a good sign that it could be time to clean or replace the rear fan.

You can do this with ease by following the below guide:

Display is dim during or after startup

The screen is very dim and barely readable. It remains dim after the Windows desktop appears. If the AC power is disconnected, the display dims to conserve battery power.

AC adapter is not connected

Attach the AC adapter to the notebook and a working electrical outlet. Restart the laptop by pressing the power button for 5 seconds.

The LCD brightness is too low

While the notebook is operating in Windows desktop, hold down the function (fn) key while pressing the f8 key to increase the brightness of the display.

The lid actuator switch is not working

The lid actuator switch is a small button or switch located on the either side of the notebook or near the display hinges. Pressing this switch while the notebook is on may cause the display to turn off or cause it to enter a different power state.

Press the switch 2-3 times and observe the display. If the display is no longer dim, the switch may need to be repaired or replaced.

Note: If none of the above suggestions work, the back light may be damaged and need to be replaced.

Battery is unattached

The battery may have become dislodged during transportation. Look at bottom of computer and make sure the battery is locked tight.

Battery is worn out

Over the life of a battery the amount of charge it can hold decreases. Turn on computer and monitor charge indicator in taskbar. If it depletes quickly plug in AC adapter and purchase new battery.
