So, I changed the cable, which did not work. I had a "headless" macbook with similar specs which I then tried to install the drive into, which did work. It now read CD's, DVD's and burns DL DVD's in the headless macbook (which is it's new home). I will test out all the other storage media later. I will reinstall my original DVD drive in my macbook, and call it a day. Hope this helps someone down the road.
