Mac Pro (2006) Power supply/replace

My Mac Pro just switched off, and its not coming back on, its dead! After googling it people say it could be the logic board, but most likely the power unit

its about 6 years old, i got a second hdd installed before, worked fine but then the mac would not start up (flashing question mark) seems to be a common enough issue but that was resolved, the hdd was not installed correctly.

This time the mac is dead, at first there was no noise, no lights nothing, (it turned off while i was running final cut pro 7) Now after i disconnected all cables everything, reconnected everything and pressed power button for 5 seconds i looked back at machine and noticed led on monitor is on, and i can hear some very low noise at the back of the tower, where the power cable connected

This was left idle for over a year but the last 6 weeks i have been using it solid most days, and i did notice it was a bit nosier than usual, kind of a humming noise but i did not think much of it? Its full of dust inside it, anyway this machine did turn off and on by itself for no reason a number of times since i started using it again, and sometimes did not turn back on by itself.

So i am not sure if it is the powersupply or logic board, but if its the power supply I plan on buying a replacement , do i need a specific one for my model? And i dont know how to replace the power supply, so any advice or videos would be great.

And if its the logic board... im completely lost there...

I will try to give enough details for you about my machine,

Mac Pro MacPro1,1

2.8 Ghz Xeon

Intel Core 2 Duo

3gb Ram

Model number - A1186 EMC

Serial - YM63400RUQ2

If anyone can help me id be grateful, i will be attempting this myself as i can not afford anything else, eg apple repair store ect

I got around to reading that, no help, in the sense im a diy newb anyway :/

So its either the 7300GT?

The Power unit

Or the logicboard?

I need to mention a few weeks ago i connected some logitech speakers, they things did not seem to be earthed because you could heard that extreme humming sound you get when you do not earth something. Maybe that had something to do with this? i did disconnect them straight away though, but still.. hmm

I had one of these up until this year (The 2.66ghz) and they can be extremely finicky, I believe you could use almost any logic board, thats made for this specific body style of mac pro(Before 2008 revision), but make sure your Xeon's will fit the board you get.

Personally, I don't really think the logic board would have failed for no reason.

I could be wrong though. Tearing out the logic board will be a long grueling process... My friend had one that need a board, and we opted to sell it over, beginning that process.

I am leaning toward the power supply. I'll look around this evening and see what I can figure out. This 06 Mac Pro has alot of life left in it, and it can be fixed. This was a very expensive machine when it was new.

What gpu are you running? As a long shot the graphics card may have failed.

I will do some research and get back to you, I am done w/ classes in the next couple weeks, I am completely down to help you diagnose exactly what has failed. Once you know whats wrong, the rest is easy.

Thanks :) and my gpu, NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT but keeping in mind i got these details using my serial number and this website http://www.powerbookmedic.com/identify-m... because i do not actually remember all my specs, but it does seem very familiar.

Are you sure it still might be the power unit, the led light will light up on the monitor sometimes when i plug in the plugs but not always, and im still hearing some noise at the back of the tower, its a small buzzing sound, really low, i can barely hear it though, maybe something blew... im not sure, thats why im here :)

There should be a way to test the power supply with a multi-meter, have you ever used one before? ill have to look into how you could go about doing this.

Also the 7300GT had a lot of problems, I guess what we need to do is find a way to definitively prove that the power supply is still good, then move onto the graphics card.

The 06 mac pro had fully buffered ram, there is a few different ram resets/ power resets that are unique to the mac pro, these may be worth a try!

I'll get back to you this evening, after I rack my brain a little!

Just a note, make sure you have the original system installation disk as you will need the fan syncing software on it to reset it after any major parts replacement or the fans will run away. Tell us about the diagnostic lights on the logic board, please.

@mayer Hi Mayer, thank you for your help on here and insights. I'm in the process of having to replace the PSU on my mac pro 5,1 and I saw that you mentioned that the original disc is needed for resyncing the fans. Sadly I do not have the original disc. I have three questions

1) is there any other way to perform this task? like using Apple Hardware Test?

2) is it possible to use the discs from any other Mac Pro 5,1 or are they locked to logic board somehow?

3) what could be a potential way to get a hold of a copy of the disc?

your help and support is massively appreciated.
