Boots to blank screen, no image or backlight, external monitor works

Having some issue with my 2019 not showing an image on its display. It boots normally and touch bar is working but i am getting no signs of life from the lcd. Backlight is not on and there is not image even when i shine a light at the screen.

The weird thing is if i boot it and then connect an external monitor nothing happens, however if I boot it while the external monitor is connected the backlight comes on(still no image) and the external monitor then shows up like it normally would.

Another thing I noticed is that under display settings when the external monitor is connected, it only recognizes the external monitor and not the internal/main lcd of the laptop.

Just curious if anyone has had a similar issue and if im looking at a bad lcd or bad board.

Ive already tried smc/pram resets as well as reinstall of macOS and even revive via another mac with no changes.

Update (07/20/24)

Hey just wanted to give you guys an update. I have another a2141 16" that is a fully working. I took the suspected bad display and swapped it onto that laptop and the faulty display turns out not to be faulty. Works perfect. So the issue is forsure not the display but rather the board. Gonna have to do some more investigation

Hey just wanted to give you guys an update. I have another a2141 16" that is a fully working. I took the suspected bad display and swapped it onto that laptop and the faulty display turns out not to be faulty. Works perfect. So the issue is forsure not the display but rather the board. Gonna have to do some more investigation

Still using the external monitor and an external keyboard as well as a mouse. Now with everything connected, restart the system and close the lid! This what we call Clamshell Mode. The system should work if the internal is having issues. Let us know if that worked.

Clamshell mode works as does connecting to an external monitor. However internal monitor does not work even when woken from clamshell mode

@williamalexiev - Then you’ve proven the issue is within the display assembly, either a cracked LCD, damaged LCD data ribbon cable or the T-CON is damaged.


Look at the screens bottom edge where the logo is this is the Chin Plate is it chipped or cracked?


If you feel you can attempt it take the display off and inspect the ribbon cables do you see exposed copper traces, the black paint maybe rubbed a bit so don’t read to much on that, do you see any wrinkles or tears. Guardian10 had the guide and the replacement assembly in his answer.


A cracked LCD isn’t always visible and the T-CON is as well.

Display is not cracked and looks pretty much new. Chin plate with mbp logo is also in great shape with no cracks or chips. My next step will be to remove the display and inspecting the cables.

These models of MacBook are notorious for the display cables wearing out quicker than normal. Based on the fact that the external display works, this is the most likely answer.

The display cable in question is soldered to the TCON board, making it nearly impossible to replace the cable on it's own. Your best bet would be replacing the display or getting someone to do it for you.

@guardian10 - While that’s a strong possibility, it’s still early until the external shows an image as there are a few other possibilities.


FYI - I more often encounter physical damage of the Chin plate glass shards cutting the cables or the LCD is cracked, the 16” tend to be more prone.


In dusty environments the grit can wear the cable insulation exposing the copper traces. I have found a thin strip of Teflon tape can protect the exposed traces. If the traces are cracked then replacement is all that’s left.
