Sony STR-GX9ES partially powering up and no sound and no tuner screen

Vintage Sony STR-GX9ES does not fully power up (some lights work but not tuner display and no sound despite changing inputs and speaker A/B and other settings).

What is best way to troubleshoot this?

Boars all look OK inside and contact cleaner tried already.

One medium sized capacitor at C606 on power board has slightly bulging top.

How can I test this and the amp and other power input?

Thanks in advance.

Hi @leetaustin

Here's the service manual for the receiver that may help.

Go to p.27 (of 41 pdf) to view the schematic for the power board.

Check if all the operating voltages are OK i.e. +/-15V DC, 12.5V DC, -28V DC etc.

There's a components parts list at the end of the manual so if you find faulty components use the part number to try and find replacements.

Be safety aware when testing as there's exposed lethal AC on the power board.

Thanks for the reply.

I am not understanding which areas to test specifically.

I have 120V at the main power in and after the power switch is turned on the relay works.

Could it be a bas transformer in this ES?

How can I test this (Orange and white input OK at 120V) but nothing at the black/red into the board # VH1.

Am I testing correctly?

Thanks for any step by step pathway to test.

@leetaustin

When you say the relay "works" did you check if there's power at fuse F601 on the power board?

Did you check if Fuse F601on the power board is OK?

da

Yes there is 15V (AC) power at the fuse on both sides.

Fuse is OK.

Relay clicks and lets power to this fuse.

What do you suggest I test next ?

Thanks again

@leetaustin

Check your measurements at the fuse.

There should be the full 120V AC on the fuse when measured from either side to earth.

Check if you're getting 12.5V DC on connector DA830 pin 1.

You could also disconnect power to the board and check if the power transformer windings all have continuity.

See the schematic on p.27.

There is 120 V AC at the fuse.

There is 13.8 V DC at DA830 pin #1.

What is next to test?

Thanks for your help.
