Disk Drive not reading disks

When I put in a game disk it tries to read it for a minute or so and then shows a disk with a question mark saying "Unreadable Disk." We just got this game for Christmas and it worked on the PS4, but in case it is somehow damaged I tried a couple other games with the same problem. I should note I tried to put in a Bluray and drive did the same thing attempting it for a minute but it didn't show up on the screen at all.

For debugging, I shut the machine off completely and started it back up. I started it up in safe mode and cleared the cache and cleaned the database indexes. The next step in the instructions was to erase the whole machine.

Since how the drive sounds is important, I uploaded a video clip of me putting in the disk and trying it out. As you will notice, the insert and eject mechanism seem to be running fine, at about 1:08 you will here that mechanism is trying to reset the disk or something.

It sounds like it's just the head and I am hoping I can just open it up and use a swap with rubbing alcohol on the head.

My three questions are:

  1. From the sound of that video, what do you think the issue is?
  2. Can I get to the head with just a normal small phillips head screwdriver or do I need special screwdrivers? If so, where is the best place to get those?
  3. If I have to get a new disk drive and salvage the daughter board from the old one, where would you recommend I get that? On these repair videos they always have a strong recommendation but they give me the recommendation with a referral code, so I don't know if it's really the best or who's paying them the best.

I contacted my local game store and asked about repairs and they quoted me $135 to rebuild the drive (whatever that means) and they only guaranteed the drive for a month. The system is over 2 years old so no warranty.

Thank you all!

From the video, the load/unload mechanism works, but issue happens when the disc tries to spin up.

Sounds like the laser has trouble locking and focusing onto a track, the disc spins up a bit, laser zooms around trying to find a track and fails.

This should not be a very difficult repair.

Replace the disc drive but KEEP the original drive controller board will usually fix the issue. Buy a replacement drive of the exact same model (there may be some revisions and not compatible with each other), take the original controller board from your drive and put it on the new drive, then put everything back together and see if it works.

For tools, ifixit sells a pretty decent set, but some parts seller give you a few spare screwdrivers with the drive purchase.

For parts, you need to confirm which drive it has first, maybe take it apart and check it?

Thanks for your input. It sounds like I don't even need to replace the drive. That I can just buy this unit:

https://www.fasttech.ca/playstation-5-1/...

and that would hopefully fix the issue. It's a little pricier but they supposedly have a lifetime warranty, so unless I can find some other part much cheaper I will probably go that route.

This will be after I just try to brush off the laser head with some rubbing alcohol and a q-tip and try that. Someone on reddit said it sounded like the spinning mechanism was bad but I don't think so, it sounds the same as when I put in a heavily scratched disk.
