Try enabling the raise to wake setting and check if lifting the phone works to turn on the screen.
Go to Settings → Convenience Aid → Gesture and Motions → Wake to raise.
If it also doesn't work there may be a problem with the proximity sensor in the phone. Is the phone in a protective case at all? If so remove it from the case and check if you can wake up the phone by pressing the power button or lifting the phone.
