Sandisk video has no sound on Chromebook

I put some videos on an external sandisk drive. When I play them on my old laptop the sound is there. When I plug the sandisk into my chromebook the video will play, but there is no sound. I reformatted the sandisk and tried again, same problem. I just checked and I can play sound from youtube videos on the CB so it isn't something silly like the sound being turned down.
