No crank, no start

I have a 99 accord that with out warning started running rough and then stopped starting. It wouldn’t do anything. When I plugged my code reader in to see if there were any codes, the car started but the engine ran very rough and if I unplugged the code reader the engine would instantly cut off. No codes but the only way to get the engine to run is to have the code reader plugged in. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

OBD II readers receive signals to decode error messages from the engine or body control module. Most readers have a reset capability to erase stored error codes. Rather than second guess this problem, maybe main power issues are creating this problem; battery, battery cables and their connections including main grounds, drive belt and belt tensioner, and alternator. Is the battery at full voltage - 12.5v or less? Can you jump start the car?

@notbroken without the code reader plugged in there is nothing, with it plugged in the car starts up ( extremely rough idle and the speed odometer is moves up if the rpm’s increase even though the car is not moving )

This is very unusual and maybe a first. Perhaps a mobil tech is needed or driving this car to a repair shop. It may be wise to call ahead and explain this as this isn't normal by any stretch of the imagination. Are there any aftermarket mods?

Hi,

Don't know why a code reader would help it to start but here's the start wiring and ignition wiring diagrams for the vehicle from the 1998-2002 Honda Accord service manual that may help.
