Joycons wont stay on in handheld mode

Whenever i try to play a game in handheld mode, my joy-cons will not stay connected to the console( both left and right have this issue but the left side has gotten so bad that if i turn the device upside down without supporting the joycon it will literally just slide right off). This causes me to constantly have to stop, re-seat both controllers and choose handheld mode of play before i can continue. Does anyone else have this problem? What do i need to do to fix this? Playing handheld as well as docked is one of the greatest features but as of late, i am stuck with only being able to play when docked.

Greetings Nichole,

With me not knowing too much about switch repairability there are certainly other more reputable fixers who would probably diagnose this quicker but I'll try my best here.

Firstly, Have you check that the locking tabs actually lock (On both the console and controller). If there is not a click when the controllers are connected (Physical click) then either the controller or Console rail is toast. I will link you to both the left and right joy con rail replacement guides from ifixit.

As far as actually fixing the faulty parts, Nintendo doesn't make this easy (if possible) as it's all soldered and glued together meaning you could further risk breaking it. For repairing a switch i would recommend an ifixit kit simply because of their reliability (I have one and it's really useful).

It does click, but not lock in place. I believe you are correct about the rails being toast - I had just hoped it would be something simpler. I previewed those repairs and I am personally not up to the task , too great a repair for me to risk toasting the whole console. I love my switch I just hate, the ease with which the joycons disconnect in handheld mode, seeing as how I play very…. active games. Not sure what to do now. Sigh.

Yeah. If you value your switch that much it would be worth doing but if you don't have the time then just don't bother.
