Battery not charging after left I/O board and flex cable replacement

I spilled milk tea on my macbook and immediately took it to an authorized service provider near me who had the left I/O board replaced along with the flex cable.

However, when I received my macbook back I noticed it stopped charging beyond a certain percentage and the charger was only powering it. I clicked on the battery icon in the menu bar and it said that the battery was not charging.

I used another charger albeit a knock off but a very good one as it had been working perfectly fine with my macbook prior to the replacement and it charged my macbook too but then stopped charging it and held the power at 6% while I had it plugged in.I took it back to the service provider who tried a genuine magsafe adapter and it charged for a while but also stopped after 41%.

I’m not sure what the issue could’ve been since the I/O left board and flex cable had been replaced and I wasn’t experiencing this problem before even when my battery icon said that my battery needs to be replaced soon.

Could the service providers not have cleaned the liquid spill properly because I found traces of dried tea on the screen and other parts so I’m supposing they didn’t “clean” it well. Or did they not install something properly ?

So what could the issue be?

UPDATE 19/04/21

Couldn’t pick my laptop up today and install coconut battery due to stores being closed around the city.

I asked the service providers how they diagnosed this time around that it was a battery issue and this is what they said:

Here are the coconut battery screenshots, with and without the charger (knock off) connected.

The service providers also finally admitted that it’s a logic board issue and they removed the replaced left I/O board and flex cable in order to refund my payment.

Let’s get a better view of things, install this gem of an app! CoconutBattery take a snapshot of the apps main window and post it here for us to see Aggiungere immagini ad una domanda

I believe most authorized shops won’t “clean” and/or remove corrosion. They will simply replace all the parts they can, and if nothing seems to fix it, eventually they will tell you that the logic board has failed and it needs to be replaced…even if just a cleaning might fix it. That’s usually when people give up and just buy a new computer.

I'd install Coconut Battery as per Dan's instructions, if that doesn't show you anything you'll have to find a shop that specializes in board level repair. Good luck.

@danj installing coconut battery would be the first thing that I'd do after picking my laptop from the service provider tomorrow and i'll post an update!

@Dmak i didn't know that! i'll install coconut battery tomorrow and post the updates to hopefully be able to get some further advice online

also, sorry if this is a stupid question, but could there be a logic board failure issue even if my macbook is still working fine besides the charging issue? i mean, i didn't lose my data and other software and apps were running smoothly, I was even goign to upgrade to big sur, and also, after their initial diagnosis they never mentioned any logic board issue either so i'm supposing if that was the case, they would've informed me instead of only replacing the i/o board and flex cable

It is possible to have liquid damage on a non essential circuit; the computer will still turn on. In your case the battery charging circuit. However, to fix it, Apple (and any authorized dealer) would replace the entire logic board.

I wouldn't rule out your battery just yet, since it's stating it needs to be replaced soon. Might have just been coincidence that it decides to die now.

Sadly Apple service diagnostics is not designed for someone with a brain ;-{

The cycle count is at the bottom in small print instead of being front and center! 1,354 so it is beyond its cycle count of 1,000 of expected life Determine battery cycle count for Mac notebooks Without seeing CoconutBattery output its hard to say what the state of the battery is as well as the charging logic. So while it’s over its expected life span we don’t have enough information to know if there is something more going on here.

As to why the MagSafe LED is not responding correctly its likely the logic board has gotten wet around the SMC (Blue) and/or Current/DC Power Sensors (Purple) which is located on the top side of the logic board (the backside looking from the bottom)

that's sad to know I thought it would be helpful for a lot of you here to further get an idea of my issue. Anyways, I keep telling them that it should be a logic board issue, probably something like you've mentioned and their persistent it's not an issue with the logic board (as you can see from the screenshot attached).

Also, can coconut battery screenshots also help you identify if it's a logic board issue?

I will have them check what you mentioned on the logic board and if they refuse, which I'm afraid they will, then I'll get my laptop back, post the coconut battery app screenshots and wait for further help.

Thank you so much.

You are facing Horizon Thinking If I can't see it it can't be a problem! If you are on the ocean if you can't see the land or other ships there just can't be anything there! This is the effect of 'Horizon Thinking', diagnostics only tests a limited set of data points. Often people use the terms inner world and outer world. Diagnostics mostly tests the digital space not the analog space.

Apples diagnostics can be useful to a point, it can't tell you if the battery is good or if the charging logic is working properly. While the information is there, it takes a brain to understand what the data is telling you.

Apple by design doesn't want their techs fixing their systems with there grey matter! They want people who limit there efforts to replacing parts. Apple doesn't fix logic boards or any returned parts, its all ground up and put into a landfill. Apple is so green, NOT!

So yes, CoconutBattery is the magic tool I use! I often need two snapshots one with with out the charger plugged in and a second with it plugged in after waiting a bit and oder charge.
