Battery Level dropping from 60% to 7% instantly

Hi!

Block Image

This is the second time I’ve replaced my battery with an ifixit battery and this is the second time this issue has came up. After replacing the battery and running the calibration cycle, I would use my laptop on its battery and somewhere around 70%-60% battery level, the battery level would just shoot down to 7%.

Initially on the first time around with replacing the battery, I just figured they sent me a faulty battery, but didn’t have time to buy another one and change it out, so i lived with the power adapter. I finally had a chance to replace it to a new battery, but the same thing just happened. Now, Im hoping to find some answers from you all if I have another faulty battery or some other insight on what it might can be.

Appreciate whatever insight provided!

Here’s a photo with the coconut battery app. In the screenshot under the “BATTERY (last 12 hours)” you can see the instant drop in battery level.

was the charger connected when you took the snapshot? What was the color of the MagSafe charger LED Amber, Green or not lit?

Let’s get a better view of things, install this gem of an app! CoconutBattery take a snapshot of the apps main window and post it here for us to see Aggiungere immagini ad una domanda

@danj The charger was not connected when the snapshot was taken. Though when I initially charged the battery, it seemed to work as aspected. Amber when charging and Green when fully charged

@rodneyd - Lets see what CoconutBattery shows. I'm not sure if you really have a problem with the battery or just hadn't allowed SMC to meter out the battery so it learned what the min-max levels of the new battery.

I've seen this exact problem happen on the same model machine after replacing the battery (it would even jump specifically to 7% charge). I never learned exactly what was causing the issue and chalked it up to a battery calibration issue. I replaced the battery again and calibrated it by letting it fully charge, then fully discharge, then fully charge again. I couldn't recreate the problem afterward, but I only tested for about 24 hours. I'm beginning to think there might be an issue with this model that causes this to happen after some weird event occurs. Good luck!

@danj I've updated the post showing what CoconutBattery shows after the battery level has dropped. I can also update it again to show what CoconutBattery reads when the laptop is plugged in and fully charged if it will help you give a better assessment. Thanks!

I don’t see any issue with the battery or the charger. They are both working properly.

The drop off you caught here tells me SMC still has your older values.

Block Image

I think your issue comes down to SMC not having the Min-Max values stored. So you may need to run the calibration process again or your SMC logic on the main logic board may need repairs.

It is a battery fault, and I am pretty sure about it. Battery is made up by combining many small cells. Each cell has its own power and capacity. All the cells are connected in a pattern inside the battery. As an example if your laptop battery has six cells and all the cells are fully charge. When you would start using the sixth cell first drain, then after fifth and fourth. In case your third or next cells are faulty, your battery will suddenly drain to 10% or 0%. Seems like some cells of your laptop battery are dead, and it’s dropping from 60% to 7% instantly.

@elviswhite -Battery is a bit more complex!

Cells can be wired in Series like a freight train running on a single pathway, only one car goes down the line so the voltage goes up but the current stays constant, The amount of current is extended. Batteries can also be wired in Parallel like a major highway so multiple vehicles can run at once so the current goes up but the voltage stays constant. To add to it batteries can often use both techniques! Boosting both.

While batteries can be defective from the start, without doing proper diagnostics its hard to tell what is at fault. Here, it looks like the issue is the min-max values held in SMC which is needed so the battery is properly charged. The best way to think this is you fill your cars gas tank without the ability of the pump to sense the fuel you could over fill the tank if you didn't have an idea how big your tank was as well as the metering of the pump its self.

My Macbook Pro is exhibiting the exactly same symptom as I am typing this now; around 57% down to 7% instantly like in a second. I only noticed this as the "Low Battery" sign popped up at a corner. I don't think this is due to a faulty battery but the computer was programed to display a faulty reading the level. If 50% of energy had gone instantaneously like this, the computer should have caught in a big fire with an explosion. Apple does these stupid things, like making the device rejects third party parts or even real oem replacement parts if they are not installed by Apple technicians. This effectively prevents informed customers from self upgrading their Apple devices.

@alberteins39381 - I have two of these and both have had there batteries replaced a few times as I was using the systems hard. I’ve never encountered what you fear! There are a few cheap knockoff chargers which have damaged SMC so the charging logic gets damaged.

That’s not a battery issue and while Apple has made things harder to repair we can’t blame them here.

Time to get your system fixed.
