When upgrading hard drive, use older OEM or new retail OS?

I'm upgrading hard drive from OEM 120GB to 500GB and would like to know if I should use the OEM 10.5.6 OS discs or a newer retail version of Snow Leopard that I also have. When working on PCs it's best to use the OEMs as they contain device drivers and then upgrade from there. Also, I've noticed that retail versions tend to be bloated installs and of course I would like to avoid this. I'm thinking OEMs then customized 10.6 upgrade but would really appreciate more seasoned opinions.

Thank you, Teknoman

Hi, I personally would go to a customized install of 10.6 and save the bother of 10.5. Good luck with your install.

+ In this case 10,6 is the leaner install as it does not include all the old coding for Power PC

If your 120GB HD is still in the machine you can buy a cheap USB 2.0 2.5" SATA external enclosure, put your 500GB inside then download SuperDuper and install it on the 120GB then clone the 120GB to the 500GB. You'll get an exact bootable copy of the 120GB. Just install the 500GB in the machine and update the system with 10.6. As a bonus you'll have a back-up of your system in the external enclosure ready to boot the machine when you'll need it.
