Whirlpool Upright Freezer will not turn on

I have a Whirlpool Upright Freezer, model WZF34X16DW00, when I plug it in, there is power, the light comes on but the freezer compressor or fan will not start. When I pick a temperature setting (There are three led light settings) it will stay solid on one setting for about a minute and then just flash continuously between the three settings.

Hi @marking12 ,

Is the compressor making a humming sound trying to start?

If not check that the compressor start relay - part #19 unit parts is OK.

Thank you for the reply. The compressor does not make any noise at all. I did replace the compressor start relay because that’s what I thought it was initially.

You may have to check if there is voltage being applied to the start relay to turn on the compressor.

Can you hear if the start relay "clicks" at all when power is applied to the freezer?

Update: I ran the diagnostic test on the control panel per the instructions found behind the freezer, everything seemed to be ok. It reset itself and I can hear the compressor running and evaporator fan running now but it has been over 24 hour and it is not cold.

What is the temperature in the freezer?

Is it going down at all? Sometimes it can take a little longer to get to the set temp but agreed usually 24 hours should be sufficient.

If still not getting there and the compressor and evap fan is running continually trying to achieve the temperature then there may be a problem is the sealed system.

Is the compressor too hot to touch?

The high/low pressures need to be checked to determine what the problem is the sealed system is. They will indicate things like a lack of refrigerant due to a leak, a blockage or perhaps a faulty compressor.

Check for any oily residues below the compressor or on the condenser coils. They may indicate a leak of the refrigerant. There is a special lubricating oil added to the refrigerant and if there is a leak there, the gas will escape undetected into the air but the oil will leave a trace.

Depending on your location, you may need a licenced repairer to check the sealed system, due to the environmental regulations regarding the handling of refrigerant gases. Besides which they have all the test gear as well ;-)

Again, thank you for your time, I appreciate it. Its been at least 48 hours and it is still warm in the freezer. The compressor is warm, I can keep my hand on it for a little bit but then gets a little uncomfortable. One of the copper lines coming from the compressor is warm and one is cool. Again it is only an upright freezer with no water lines. There is a sound inside the freezer that sounds like water dripping or gurgling. Is that normal? Could the automatic defrost be constantly on? If it is what you may think it is, is it cost effective to have the unit checked? Also I do not detect any oily residue.

It is possible that there is a connection with the refrigerator sensors after the first switch-on, and this pauses the freedge's main board. In any case, User Guide for this model on on the page #9 says to wait 24 hours after turning it on before adjusting the fridge temperature.
