Internal display acts as "second monitor".

Hello there,

I have a iMac mid-2010 which I recently did a GPU replacement on and have a little problem since then.

Whenever I turn on my iMac I have to connect it to an external display to even log in and after entering my password my iMac then turns the internal display on and the main screen is on the internal display.

Is there something I have missed? Something I need to set or change?

A PRAM/SMC reset doesn’t seem to do the trick.

Thank you for any advise.

No, you didn’t make a mistake in installing the GPU board.

But, you didn’t get the correct one! The Apple units have custom firmware which is why yours is responding like this.

Sadly, you’ll need to take it out, return it to get your money back and then order a new one (real Apple unit) from a Mac parts house.

The GPU board is a known working one that had been pulled out of a broken iMac, which the seller could prove. This is what I can add to this.

But knowing this, is there a way to find out about the GPUs specs? Any piece of software that could help tell me?

The specs won't help you here as the Apple part is the same as others that used the AMD board! Its the code within it thats different!

So if you go to About This Mac > System Report > Locate the section Graphics/Displays, click on it and you'll see what you system has.

Your system came with two options:

● ATI (AMD) Radeon HD 4670 (with 256 MB VRAM) - Apple P/N 661-5539

● ATI (AMD) Radeon HD 5670 (with 512 MB VRAM) - Apple P/N 661-5546

EFI Driver Version: 01.00.367

Displays:

iMac:

Display Type: LCD

I have the original rom for this GPU, would it help to flash it onto the card I have at the moment? It's from the original GPU before it completely died.

Let's say it is a real Apple board then its still bad. I would return the part as its defective!

The only time I've seen this response is when the board does not have the Apple firmware so its board.

@mayer - I don't have my firmware listing anymore, do you know if this is the correct firmware for this board?
