What do you mean by 'blocked'?

How do you suggest finding the owner?

Just because a phone is "blocked" (I'm assuming it has a bad ESN and is blocked from the network) doesn't mean that it's stolen. There are plenty of plausable reasons for this. He could have bought the phone broken, or he could have been sold a phone that was already blocked. I don't really think it's fair to assume that a phone is stolen just because it is blocked (Even though he hasn't really elaborated on the problem)

joe, use checkmend..it'll cost you £2 for a single check. It'll let you know if it is lost/stolen/written off ...if it is listed as stolen then you are stuck. the owner(hopefully the person you purchased from) needs to have the phone unblocked. It is currently illegal in the UK to "unblock" a phone apart from through your provider... if the phone worked and then stopped after 1 week, and you know who you purchased from, i'd ring up the carrier/insurance and report them for fraud... the only other option is to sell overseas..plenty on ebay/gumtree doing just that. You could try to fix the water damage..you may just resurrect your wifes phone and then she'll be all happy again (again)

ps it is also illegal to change you imei.....

I would suggest calling the carrier first to see what you can do. The problem is you’re stuck since they won’t help you unblock the IMEI as you bought it from someone else who created the issue. The old owner will need to do it, but don’t hold your breath as they will probably ignore your plea to fix it. Only do this through the carrier, because you may end up finding out someone took your IMEI and “cloned” it onto a stolen phone if you ever get it back into a usable state.

I don’t recommend trying to reprogram the IMEI - it is illegal and high risk. If you get it wrong - even once, it could prevent it from ever being a phone. Since it’s so risky, almost nobody can get it right. Your best bet is to find a phone with a good board with a cracked screen (IMEI must be clear) and use that to fix it. It’s the only legal way to fix this problem, and is the only thing I am going to recommend accordingly.

no, you were just trying to help which is great! go with your instincts though.. if a phone is barred it's for a reason, even tho' chris will disagree with me.

Hi,  I realise this is an old post and wondering if anyone is still out there? I have an old Nokia N8 which was tied to O2. I asked O2 to send me an unlatching code, which they did. Turns out this was for a different IMEI number so the phone is now blocked. O2 apologised and offered to send me a new handset (soon realised they’re not still in production, so refunded me £72 instead) I really wanted to reinstate this phone though so wondered if, 8 years later, there is a way to unblock this N8 in the UK?
