HDD Mounting Pins for SSD only iMac 2017.

Guys, i’m looking at adding another SSD to my SSD only iMac.

I understand that when i open up the iMac, the mounting bracket will already be in place. However, since there is no fusion drive (SSD only Mac ordered from apple) the drive mounting screws/pins wont be there to attach the secondary SSD to the brackets. Where can i find those?

Any help would be highly appreciated.

Here’s one source for the 3.5” frame screws:

You’ll still need an adapter frame to convert the 3.5” mount to hold you're 2.5” SATA SSD drive.

You will also need a few other sundries iMac Intel 27" (Late 2012-2019) SSD Upgrade Kit and most important the pizza cutter and cards so you don’t damage your display.

Follow this guide to get the display off Sostituzione Schermo Retina 5K iMac Intel 27"

With that said you might think about going with an external drive as it maybe easier and offer the performance you are likely looking for. While SATA III (6.0 Gb/s) is fast Thunderbolt is faster! This is one drive I recommend OWC Express 4M2 as it allows you to use cheaper M.2 SSD’s of your choice. Or if you want something smaller and more portable OWC ThunderBlade

Hi,

Thank you for your response. I have a few questions on this upgrade -

This was an SSD only iMac, so will the left and right brackets be there when i open up the iMac?

Is the thermal sensor required if i’m adding a secondary SSD and not a mechanical Hard drive?

The only option for the hard drive mounting pins is to ship then from the UK which seems to be too big a hassle. Would you know if i can replace these pins with actual screws. I can screw them to the brackets instead of using the mounting pins. Any idea if this will work?

Thanks again for all your help.

The system does have the needed 3.5" drive bracket. Its not that big a hassle ordering from the UK, true its a bit more expensive. I find they just do a better job and have what I need.

You'll still need a 2.5" adapter frame as well as the in-line thermal sensor which is why I had pointed you to the kit which also has most everything else you'll need.

I did forget you'll also need the custom SATA cable Apple uses iMac 27" Retina 5K Hard Drive Combo Cable - Apple P/N 923-00664

I have the same question and I am not sure that it is answered (sorry). Will the left and right mounting brackets be in the iMac if it is a SSD only model? I have a 2.5" to 3.5" adapter bracket but need to know if the iMac comes with the left and right mounting brackets to mount the 3.5" adapter to. Basically I need to know if I need to buy these 2 items: https://www.thebookyard.com/product.php?... and https://www.thebookyard.com/product.php?...

To be clear…

So if I have a SSD only model (without a 3.5” fusion drive) will the iMac have left and right brackets for the 3.5” adapter frame OR do I have to purchase the left and right brockets? Obviously if there was an included fusion drive then there would be no issue as the brackets would need to be present. Does anyone know?

The brackets are present on all of the 2015 & 2017 systems I've worked on. You will need the SATA & Power cable and you'll need the 2.5" to 3.5" adapter frame if you are putting in a SSD as well as the screws and pin screws to mount the drive.

Thank You Dan. That is excellent and very helpful. Do I really need special screws and pins to put in a drive. I have my own 3.5 to 2.5 converter and screw the drive in place to the bracket (just did a server with a similar SSD the other day). Please let me know. Thanks Again!

You need the pin screws as you can't gain access to the screw heads on one side. Review the guide Sostituzione hard drive su iMac Intel 27" con display Retina 5K jump to Steps 33 & 33 to see what I mean for the 2.5" 3.5" adapter frame. You still need the screws to mount the SSD to the adapter frame.
