Replace WD 500G Harddrive by WD 1T, Fan running at full speed

I replaced original 500G WD hard drive by a 1T WD blue caviar hard drive (Model no WD10EALX). I put the thermal sensor back but the fan running at full speed. I am wondering if I put the thermal sensor back correctly. I followed the instruction to put it back where near the SATA connector.

Is that compatibility issue? Does any one has the picture or detail of the thermal sensor orientation that I can reference to put it back correctly

Soluzione Prescelta

Apple has changed the standard four-wire SATA power connector for the new iMac's internal drive to a proprietary seven-wire config. removing this drive from the system, or even from that bay itself, causes the machine’s hard drive fans to spin at maximum speed and replacing the drive with any non-Apple original drive will result in the iMac failing the Apple Hardware Test (AHT). In short, the Apple-branded main hard drive cannot be moved, removed or replaced.

Of course there is a lot of ongoing research to resolve this problem. HardDrive Fan Control may be one option.

Stay tuned, the cry from loyal Mac users to this high handed dilemma created by Apple will have ramifications.

Hi Brian

I was having the same problem I found that the older stick on thermal sensor from one of the older iMac's work's 100% and fixed my problem.
