Why the need to remove cmos battery?

I read that anytime you need to upgrade ram or hard drive in

this macbook unibody model, you need to remove the mainboard cmos battery before doing any work. Why is that?

You didn't need to remove the mainboard battery in other older various macbooks when upgrading them.

jon, on a Mac it's called a PRAM battery and CMOS on a PC. As far as I know there are no PRAM batteries on the Unibodies. You may be referring to the main battery. On all the older MacBooks that I can think of, you have to remove the battery to get to the RAM slots.

pretty much sums it up

Sounds like you're here for the sake of argument. If you'd like to quote your source, I'll be happy to look at it. I do remove the main battery when working on a machine. I do not remove the PRAM battery.

No you misunderstand. This doesn't sum anything up!

I'm NOT referring to the main macbook battery at all! I'm referring to the battery on the mainboard. If you look at any of the 26 step by step guides for the MacBook Unibody Model A1342, STEP 3 is to remove the battery off the mainboard with either a spudger or your fingernails.

Why does the mainboard battery (pram?) need to be removed before any work needs to be done? Other older macbooks I used to own when upgrading ram/hard drive didn't require removing the mainboard battery as shown in these steps for the newer Unibody Macbook models.

Step 3 is disconnecting the main battery from the logic board--it is not a pram battery. You do this to prevent a voltage spike from damaging your memory or logic board. While other books may not say to remove the batteries its always a good idea to remove power before working on them.

exactly, read the guide. nowhere does it mention anything about a PRAM battery anywhere in the guide. the only battery in this model, which Mayer already said, is the main battery.
