This answer sounds crazy Bc I have this problem all the time. It click click clicks on and off and the "lid lock" will start blinking" and the only way to turn it off is to unplug it. I think it's something with the weight distribution error. I spin the washer around with my hand crazy fast and blow into the lid lock and the lock and than slam the lid down and walaa. Works every time lol. Sometimes I have to do a few cycles of my

Manual hand spin but luckily it works. The click turns on when it goes to spin and stops the spin each time.

My lid switch failed, so I replaced it, with a new part, from Maytag. Installed the new switch, and the solenoid is only making an intermittent buzz/click noise.

Last of these washers I’ll ever buy.

arrgh... mine is 6 days left in warranty - BUT I cannot find the receipt. Only able to see the purchase on my credit card - not even able to see specific merchandise I bought, so doubt whirpool would honor it. The lock "tries" to engage then clicks off. Cycle goes straight to "done" - no wash. Lock light never came on. Pulled out the switch and tried the "bypass" many mention on yourtube - nothing, not even the clicks. Put it all back and it does the clicking - only this time it cycles through the attempted lock/fail (double click) 3x - six 'clicks.' Arrgh... guess I'll order a new one. Should've written down the part number when I had it apart.

Happened this morning gotta try it now, cause I don't have 500 dollars for another one!!!!! Fingers crossed

Just happened to me today. Yesterday it was fine. I also unplugged in frustration plugged back in and slammed the lid. That apparently worked as I was looking this up here and typing. Crazy!

First, it should be covered under warranty!

Cause 1

Door Lock Motor and Switch Assembly

The door lock secures the washer door shut during operation. Once the washer door is closed, the washer can begin operating. If the door lock is defective, the washer door will not latch properly. The door lock can fail either mechanically or electrically. Inspect the door lock for damage. If the door lock is damaged or does not latch properly, replace it. To determine if the door lock has failed electrically, use a multimeter to test each of the door lock switches for continuity. If one of the switches does not have continuity, replace the switch.

Cause 2

Door Lock

The door lock assembly might be defective. Inspect the door lock for damage. If the door lock is damaged, replace it.

Cause 3

Door Latch

The door latch assembly might be defective. Inspect the door latch for damage. If the door latch is damaged, replace it.

Cause 4

Door Strike

Inspect the door strike assembly for damage. If the door strike is broken, replace it. The door strike is not repairable—if it is broken, you must replace it.

Parts

Cause 5

Main Control Board

The main control board may be defective. However, this is rarely the case. Before replacing the main control board, first check all of the components of the lock mechanism. If none of these parts are defective, consider replacing the main control board.

I checked the switch for continuity and found a lot of resistance on one switch and open on the other. Since it is over $100 for a new part I took the apart and cleaned the contacts, problem solved. This is easy to take apart and reassemble.

Nonsense! I seriously doubt “Richard” is even commenting on the right washer. Sounds like someone with nothing better to do… these machines “vertical modular washers” are cheaply made, and the lid locks are no exception. If he did take the lock apart, he would have found a micro solenoid, some other plastic parts, which fail, and cannot be repaired. Just replace the lid lock and save yourself a lot of hassle. Also, these washers can have an issue with another component and it will make the door lock do funny things. Point being, it may not even be the lid lock.

The crazy idea with blowing into the lid switch is something I'm going to try. I just bought this Whirlpool washer, and cleaned it and I think water got into the lid switch because it just keeps clicking and clicking and blinking locked but will not start. I've tried to reset, the diagnostic reset, and the door slam reset. I think I got my little switch wet. Could a wet lid switch cause this problem?

There’s an adjustable fulcrum which allows the contact spring cam to.....well, camber.

On a well calibrated assembly, the spring would last several years before eventually getting hot enough to bend. By adjusting the screw in, increasing the height of the fulcrum, I was able to get mine operational again. To access this adjuster, you must remove the lock actuator assembly from the lock/mounting assembly. (Remove the grey part from the black part)

I only went as in depth as I did, after a new part did not fix the issue.

My Whirlpool top loading washer and Whirlpool dryer were sold as a pair. Each time I remove a load from the dryer, and close the dryer door, the Washer lid latch clicks twice !

I appreciate your answers to the original question. I may need to use your method in the future.

Appliances have minds of their own.

I hold the lid down, hear and feel the click, then keep holding until it does the back and forth spin/balance thing, then when water starts I let it go.

Not a fix but a bandaid. These comments will help me locate a fix. Thank you.
