How to determine if digitize has 71 or 90 pins?

Hi, I was given a Amazon Kindle Fire HDX 8.9 3rd gen and it needs a screen replacement. I am reading that there are two different digitizes. One with 71 Pins and one with 90 Pins. Now my question is how can I determine which one mine as without opening it? Is it possible to determine which amount of pins it has without opening it?

Hi @dudefoxlive ,

Wondering if you search online for the digitizer, using the model number found on the back cover of the tablet, rather than the "name" of the model, to get the correct one would work, e.g. Kindle (insert model number) digitizer (or LCD screen if that is what you mean).

@jayeff

I'm sorry. I did forget to add that. It an Amazon Kindle Fire HDX 8.9 gu045rw. I hope this is helpful as i actually want to fix this and use it for viewing PDF's and such. Also can i order just the digitizer and remove the old LCD and move it to the new Digitizer or do I need to purchase a complete set already put together?

Hi @dudefoxlive

As I said if you search online for Kindle GU 045RW digitizer there are results for suppliers.

Unfortunately most of the ones I checked say “currently out of stock”. You may have better luck

The good news for you is that the digitizer is a separate part to the display panel so if you can source a digitizer you should be able to install it with the original LCD panel

If you cannot source a digitizer then here’s one option that you may wish to consider if the price is right and if you’re prepared to gamble that the digitizer (and possibly the LCD panel as well - perhaps a bonus!) is still OK. Just a thought ;-)

OK now one other question has come to mind. If i get the digitizer how would I go about removing the old LCD? Is it held in with clips? I want to spend only as much as needed to fix this tablet.

Hi @dudefoxlive ,

Don't know the answer to that one.

Here's a link to a partial teardown of the tablet. Once you have the display assembly section separated from the body you should be able to work out how it is held and also check on the number of pins in the connector
