Dropped my Dell Inspiron 15 (7568) and now the screen is black?

My laptop fell off my lofted bed headfirst (ouch) and the screen &LCD cracked, leaving a panel of the screen grey and blacked out. But now i dropped it again off my desk and now the screen was frozen so i force powered it off and turned it back on but this screen didn’t come on. Only the keyboard comes on and the light blinks 2 amber and 7 white lights.

I replaced the Screen, Bezel, and LCD completely but the screen is still black. When i connect it externally using an HDMI to a tv i can see the screen there fine? I just ordered a new LCD cable but i want to make sure I’m moving in the right direction?

Hi @binrintechy ,

Which light(s) blink on amber and white?

Try using a torch held at an angle close to the laptop screen (once the laptop has been turned on and you can see an image on the external monitor) to check if you can detect an image on the laptop screen at all. It will be very faint so perhaps in a darkened room may help.

If you cannot see an image on the screen, and as you have already replaced the display the problem is either a loose or fault video cable (check both ends), a fault on the motherboard or perhaps the new display is faulty.

If you can see an image on the screen, then you have a backlight problem.

This could be either:

a faulty backlight power supply on the motherboard,

a faulty backlight power cable to the display (looking at the service manual for your laptop, (taken from this webpage, it appears that there is no separate cable so the power may be supplied via the video cable - if there is only one cable it will be through the video cable),

a faulty lid switch. The lid switch is a magnetically operated switch that controls the backlight power. It turns “off” the screen when the lid is closed) It is usually a magnet in the lid (below the screen) operating a switch (somewhere between the top of the keyboard and the back of the laptop. Looking at the manual it makes no mention of the switch. Try using a magnet (reasonably strong) and moving along the top of the laptop case between the keyboard and the back edge of the laptop and check if you can “make” the screen come on. Do it near the Power button as the switch may be incorporated into the power button board. (not sure about this though)
