Remove and clean rear LCD cover

The inside of the rear LCD cover on my Nikon D300 has become dirty - looks like road traffic film on a car window.

How do I get it off/open the case to clean it?

Note: The camera is hardly used and is always stored in its case - I suspect that whatever coating was applied at the factory has gone cloudy.

Sorry no-one gave you the specific advice you requested. I have the same problem with my Nikon D300 (which is otherwise in very good condition). I have seen a video in which the back of a DSLR camera was warmed gently with a hairdryer (to soften the glue around the edge of the glass) and the protective glass pulled away using a suction pad. I assume the replacement glass (hopefully obtainable on-line) already had glue around the edge and is presumably pressed firmly in place and left to set.

I am still researching this as I do not wish to pay a repairer for the cost of replacing the LCD screen itself when it may only be the protective glass which is fogged.

Look on page 19 of your owner’s manual.

Hold the camera firmly in one hand, and with a finger from the other hand, insert your finger nail under the lip of the bottom edge of the LCD cover and flick it away from the camera. It pops off easily.

Clean the LCD and the cover, then reapply starting with setting the cover at the top edge and levering it down so the bottom edge of the cover snaps into place at the bottom edge of the LCD. Done.

Give the cover another wipe with a lens cloth and you’re done.

Dear Mike.

Thank you for your reply.

I don’t think I explained the problem clearly enough. The dirt/film is not under the clip-on cover, but under the glued-on screen window itself.

It almost looks like the ‘road traffic film’ you get on the inside of a car windscreen.

Judging from the smeared appearance, I suspect it might have been an anti-fogging coating that you apply to face-masks.

It did not work.

The suction tool supplied with the replacement screen protector was not up to the job. Too small. I bought a 40mm "phone screen repair sucker" from Ebay (seller is beautfuilyer) for £2.92. It came all the way from, you've guessed it, China! So if you're in the USA, better get in quick before Donald brings in his trade tariffs, otherwise you'll be paying £5.84. Wooohooo!

PS. I used the adapter on the hairdryer nozzle to better direct the hot air to the edges of the screen. You have to keep at it though. Also, the plastic tool that came with the kit is neither strong enough nor thin enough to get under the edge of the protector screen. I used a small screwdriver.

Hope this helps - assuming you've not already sorted the problem. BTW, the misting on the inside of the protector screen was just that, and it wiped off quite easily. So store your camera with a couple of bags of silica!!!
