My washer is not sensing that the lid is closed.

I have a GE top load washer model GTW680BSJ5WS. It is not sensing that the lid is closed and therefore will not start. I have replaced the lid lock, unplugged it for an extended period of time, attempted to reset it, and it does not appear that any of the connections are loose. I am completely out of ideas of what is wrong and how to fix it.

I am having this issue now. Washer is barely a year old. Should not be having this issue. I am going to report this appliance if my replacing the switches does not work. A new board coats as much as a new washer and should not need to be replaced after only a year!

Hi @sharonbraveheart,

I agree that it should not have to be replaced but electronic components/ switches etc., do fail prematurely occasionally,

Don't replace anything before checking the manufacturer's warranty for your washer.

Most manufacturer's give a 12 month parts (and labour - depends on manufacturer) warranty on the appliance.

if your washer is less than 12 months old follow the directions in the warranty as to what to do to make a claim for a manufacturer's warranty repair /replacement.

If it is just over the 12 months still contact the manufacturer anyway and see if they will help at all. Express your disappointment that a "quality" product such as theirs should fail so early on. If nothing else it is feedback for them to improve their quality control systems.

before replacing any more parts, at least try to run the Field Service mode and see if it comes up with an error. Here are the instructions for the tests for your washer. It may look a bit complex so read through it a couple of times. If it does give you an error code let us know which one. GE-washer-Service-mode.pdf

I expect this to show error code 13 which is the lid lock indicator. If you look at the actions to take, it says to confirm the switch etc. If all that is OK, then the problem is the controller as indicated above.

How do I get a controller

If the lock did not resolve the problem, I would look at either the wiring harness for the lock (part #WH19X24141 ) or the lock striker which is part of the lid (part # WH02X24106). Since the striker is plastic, I would make sure that it is no broken or bent.

Replaced all of those and it is still not sensing the lid being closed.

Well, the only part left is the control unit. The switch is just an on/off type as a safety which prevents the tub from spinning when the lid is up. If the switch and harness have been replaced and depressing the switch clicks (therefor shorting), this should work. Verify that the other end of the harness is installed correctly. If you can see the connections on the board, verify that they are not broken. If all looks good, then the control board needs to be replaced. There is nothing else left.

Which model do you have? Depending on model I can tell you what's wrong if it's a 460 model 80% of the time it's the inverter board on the motor and that costs more than that 500$ washer but if it's a higher model it's most likely a board issue or simply has an error code that needs deleted. If there is an over suds error code or out of balance code it'll stay shut off. And if you replaced the lid lock already you need to reprogram the board

How do you reprogram the board? Lid error on my GTWN5650FWS

I just removed the Lid lock , tried to bypass it with a jumper , no go. So I ordered the OEM part on a parts store , will install it tomorrow , if it does not fix the issue Im going to be realllllllllll mad, we just got the washer last winter.

If the switch doesn’t do the trick, u might need a control board $$

If the lid switch does not work it is most likely the software update module that is needed

this guy is doing service mode tests. shows when the lid test FAILS.

beats taking the switch out and doing continuity testing.

Lid switch trouble is so common with these GE washers. More ppl should show how to do this test in service mode.

He actually diagnoses the bad switch, like a broken spring inside. I think I saw other posts showing the same thing. However, somebody said they redesigned the switch. On my GTW335, the switch looked much smaller, and seemed to work differently.
