iPhone 6s screen cable ribbon sparked/smoked

I replaced the screen on my iPhone 6s. After I attached the first ribbon cable to the phone, the second cable touched the pins and sparked and smoked for a second. I proceeded to finish, and the screen is now not turning on....What do I need to replace?

UPDATE: The phone works, but just the display is not projecting an image. I can tell this because when I plug it in, it "dings", and the phone is vibrating.

You did not disconnect your battery before removing and installing the new display, the backlight fuse has blown, possibly the filter, diode, or IC damage.

It can still be repaired :)

You will need to test the backlight pins and check resistance to ground by using a multimeter, find out which pin has a damaged line, start from the top right and move to the left on the LCD Connector, there should be a solution on google, just type in 'iphone 6s backlight solution' it will show you the line to each pin. Check each component and see which part is damaged. It is not an easy do it yourself repair if you are not a microsoldering specialist.

Thank you so much. Any idea how much/how long these microsoldering repairs take, because I am not experienced.

Hey guys & gals! I have this issue too but mine never sparked. Also the screen has come fully back on for 1 - 2 seconds 2 times within a day of each other! I ordered a new screen but that hasn't worked. What fix do you recommend?

Thanks all!

You probably shorted out the backlight circuit. that's what the spark was. You have to disconnect the battery before disconnecting or reconnecting the screen assembly otherwise the backlight circuit has a tendency to blow. On the LCD connector, VCC_MAIN and GND are adjacent pins so if the connector is not perfectly lined up, it will short.

If your lucky, it's just a filter however sometimes the damage goes upstream and blows thew diode and or driver IC. This requires a micro-soldering repair.

To be certain, connect your phone to an iTunes enabled computer. Shine a bright flashlight on the screen and if you see a dim image, the the problem is the backlight circuit.

Whats a filter?

How do i know it is an issue with the screen?

da

The last paragraph of my answer will help you determine if the issue is with the screen or the backlight circuit. If the problem is with the backlight circuit, you will need to find a reputable shop that does micro-soldering repairs.

da

I see no image when I shine a flashlight. So the damage must have been done to the ribbon cable on the new screen? Is it possible that the spark damaged the circuit I was plugging the cable into?

da

Sure, it's possible. You have to eliminate variables. Try a new screen first and go from there.

Clean the contacts and try replacing the screen again with a new screen.

How do i know it is an issue with the screen?

da

You wont know until you either try some of the suggestions above from other people or get a screen from a reputable source that takes returns and if it is not the screen then you can send it back.

da

So if it isn't the screen, what should I do?

da

Then you can either look to to sending it off to have it micro soldered and repaired or you can look into a replacement phone or a replacement board.
